Wedding last night for 80 guests at one of my regular venues just outside town. Very warm evening but surprisingly, lots of people stayed in the venue.
Very nice couple (Bride was gorgeous) and lots of guests up for a good time.
I was booked from 8.00pm - Midnight. Speeches were at 8.00pm followed by cutting of the cake and then the first dance at around 8.40pm. Lots of 80's music which had people up dancing. I noticed that at around 10.00pm, the numbers dropped significantly. By 10.30pm there were less than half of the guests left and by 11.00pm I counted 15 including the Bride & Groom.
There didn't really seem to be much of an atmosphere left by then either and at 11.10pm, the Bride came over and thanked me for a brilliant job and said that I might as well play one more and knock it on the head. She wasn't upset or down or anything and said "They all have to get up for work tomorrow....lightweights!" and laughed. The Groom came over and thanked me too so it made me feel better knowing that they had a good time.
Something we were supposed to do during the evening was play 'Rockin' All Over The World' for the Bride, her Mum and Sisters as her Dad passed away 10 years to the day. When the Bride advised that we might aswell finish I asked if she wanted me to do the song for her as the last one. She thought it was a good idea and so I did it and they were mad for it. They gave me a real good cheer at the end and as each person left the building, they thanked me.
Was packed down (Disco and Uplighting) and back indoors by 12.20am which wasn't bad at all. A good night overall.
Sat here this morning like an achy thing with my coffee and trying to stay awake but have a wedding fayre to do today.
Friday was pretty mediocre in my opinion. A tad disappointing dance floor wise seeing as there were lots of 20 & 30 somethings there. The customer had put a lot of effort into this gig as they wanted something totally different. They had a New York themed wedding which sounds dodgy but it looked really cool.
The Groom is in graphics and is also a photographer and the Bride is head of marketing for a group of hotels. It was weird seeing the Groom take photos of the guests against a New York skyline backdrop. The tables and chair covers were black with illuminated led vases on top. There was a huge screen showing their photos (not supplied by me) and they'd also hired in a Candy Floss machine, Popcorn machine and the hotel had members of staff serving these. The buffet was a Burger and Hot Dog stand and they were serving HUGE burgers (I didn't have one).
Current chart and 80's were requested in advance and it turned out to be more or less chart all the way through the night. There were times when I was playing stuff that would normally get everyone up and I had 5 people on the floor. Another one of those gigs where you could see people were enjoying it, they just wouldn't get up!
Bit of a negative was this - In advance the couple had said to me that they didn't want any typical 'oldies' as they wanted to keep it "trendy". I thought this may be a problem if there were a few older people in attendance. It was fine until about 11.30pm when a guy came over and said "Excuse me young man....." (he couldn't have been much older than me)...."Don't you think it's about time you played something for us oldies like some 60's or Rock 'n Roll?".
I explained that the B&G didn't want any of that and that was the reason none had been on. The guy shook his head and went straight to the Bride. He obviously told her and I saw her say "I never said that at all!"...I felt embarassed and the guy came back smiling and said "There you go mate, get one on NOW!"....I never got round to it as I had a few people on the dancefloor at the time that had requested other stuff that seemed to be working.
Never even got a thank you at the end of the night. Last song was predictably 'New York, New York'.
Last night's gig was awesome. It was a large wedding for a couple who had been to a number of weddings I have done in the last 2 years. They couldn't wait for this night. They were really up for a good night. Predominantly Indie, 80's and Chart stuff all night with a busy dancefloor most of the time.
I can't really say much more than that. It was a pleasure to do.
Some funny moments though....The Groom is a party animal and it wasn't long before he was wrecked. He asked for Run DMC 'It's like that' and did a swan dive on the dancefloor. It looked good but I thought "Ouch!" as he hit the floor because he smacked his face on it. When he got up he was smiling and laughing as if nothing had happened but he had a split lip and blood allover his face. It looked worse than it was.
Later on in the evening, there seemed to be a bit of an argument between him and his new bride but I wasn't sure what was happening. At one point the mother of the bride came over and asked for a track and I asked if all was ok....it wasn't. She said I was doing a brilliant job and everyone was loving it but the Groom was being a real idiot as he was so drunk. She said she would have words in the morning. Funny, Funny.
So, 3 weddings this week and I am feeling it this morning. Hope everyone else had a good one.
Brilliant Gig last night. Engagement party with around 150 guests, at a local golf club. Mixture of ages. Started with current chart and moved into the 90s then 80s. Always a bit worrying when no dancers until 9.30, but the host came up to me, and said the guests are loving the music, keep doing what you're doing! After food the dance floor did pick up and became full. A few older guests, wanted a jive so Jive Bunny went down a treat and more guests requested tracks - most I had. A little 10 year old lad was the star of the night, danced to nearly song then came and sat behind set with me (constantly asking questions though :-) ) Hosts couldn't thank me enough at end and got two more bookings out of it. Feels so good the next day!
Well what can I say about last nights gig.
was in a back room in a Brighton pub, Probably about as big as 2 living rooms, Very un pro set up as there was a bar in the corner which wasnt being used, If I had used my deckstand it would have took up half the room so I used the bar, 2 tops and a set of 4 plays with starcluster laser. There was a drag act in the main bar which went on till about 2130, so my start time was 7pm till midnight, After the drag act everyone stayed in the main bar as they were playing music from the jukebox. I asked the bar staff to turn it off so people could enjoy the disco. About 11pm 40-50 piled into the room and were throwing requests at me non stop, Normal disco went out of the window went from 60`s to 80`s back to 60`s to recent. All in all a really good night and the client booked me for another event in January. I kept apologising for the unprofessional look but he didnt care and loved every bit of it.
done a 40th birthday last night, had about 100 people, should have been a good night.
Unfortunalty, the venue was split into two rooms, with me in the larger room and the bar in the other room. About 80 of the guests stayed in the bar room, the few people i had just drank and chatted.
Having started at 8pm, the first request i got was at 11pm. At 11.15pm i got about 10 people dancing, they carried on dancing to the end.
It was one of those nights i just wanted to end.
Today ive got a nice day out planned with Pauline and my daughter, and its chucking it down with rain. Typical!!
If there is one and one thing only I have learned from dj'ing at weddings and it's something I pass on to people I end up chatting to in a pub, Tescos or wherever is about the above.Quote:

Buffet was at 9 in a separate room and I did lose most then except the groom and his mates who wanted a load of 90's trance and disco but then after half an hour or so he sensibly thanked me and said I should put some more Abba on to get everyone back into the room. The bride and groom were due to leave at 10.45 but in the event stayed right to the end as everyone was dancing from toddlers to grandparents. Loads of compliments and a big fat tip :)
