Good Gig, Bad Gig.

Excellent gig last night , was at Basingstoke red lion hotel , I filled in for our very own Gary (Shakermaker promotions ) , access was great , the staff were very helpful , and there were three businesses attending the xmas party , and a wedding , The wedding crowd came in at 10:30 ish , all arranged , dancing from the off , everyone was in a party mood.

The Shania Twain song at the end was the bride and grooms first dance , and most of the guests needed a rest by then , the great thing was , every one cleared the floor for the first half of the song and gave the Bride and groom a huge round of applause.

Bad points.
Well none apart from the fact I lived in Basingstoke for 20 + years , and still managed to get lost on the way out , and that was using a sat nav :D .
Managed a couple of set up pics in the gallery , just used my mobile phone.
so all in all an excellent night.

Twinspin and I had a great gig last night, a Wedding in a nice pub just outside Hull, with a wonderful crowd, who danced from the first song to the last. Only fly in the ointment was the management. :( As per, we arrived early, and had to wait for the room to be turned round. Management weren't overly helpful, and didn't make much effort to clear our area, delaying our access by over fifteen minutes. And then of course, came out with the classic line: " When will you be ready, we want to get the punters back in? " :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: :mad: John and I at this point considered pointing out the reason why we weren't ready yet, but decided against it. It's rare that it gets to me, but last night, it really did, as we were raring to at least get the kit into place, so we could be ready to set it up, but staff were dead against it. :(

Just got in from my first xmas party (we had a room and breakfast) which was at the Trouville hotel in Bournemouth for the social and welfare club where I work (100 people)

Started the day up in Leicester where I had gone to see my kids back in Bournemouth for 2pm.

Got to the hotel just after 4 and completely set up and happy by 5.15pm
sit down dinner for 6.30 and started play at around 8pm given the diverse age groups and that a lot people just wanted to chat started the night off fairly slowly.

Had a hard core of about 20 to 30 people dancing most of the night and as changed genres some went some came played a mix of most genres from 50 right through to the present day dis a 20 min ska set which really buzzed a rock set and then in to some dance and trance which got the place jumping hope to have some photos in the gallery later.

Firstly, Nice one Daryll and thanks for covering. I'm glad it went well mate.
I now have the whole day off as the P.A. I was supplying for an Acoustic event is now not needed as the venue have mixed up their dates. It's now next week and luckily I am available.

I also have to confess that I made a bit of a muck up when I started the 'This Week' thread as I was convinced I had a wedding yesterday but I didn't. That is on the 17th! (D'oh!) and I actually realised on Friday. I'll put it down to hardly any sleep over the last week.
So, last night for me was a Christmas Party for Waitrose at a venue out of town that I do regularly. I do all of their functions, AGM's etc and they are always good nights. This one was no exception.
Dancing all night long and strangely, the best song of the night was Tina Turner - Proud Mary (I am going to have to do an edit on that track as I always have to skip through to about 2m.50s when it really gets going).
Lots of current chart stuff too which had everyone up. I did take some photos and a little bit of video too but it's not that great as I was using smoke and it's quite blurry.

The lady that books me for their functions also booked me for her daughter's wedding next year and a couple of other ladies asked for cards as they share the same birthday and will be 50 next year.

A good night and I am liking the way the gigs are going at the moment.

John played that last night, to a rapturous reception. ( Mind you, most tracks got a rapturous reception last night. If only every gig was like this. ) He played the full song, and made use of the pitch control on the Denon. :D :D

What is it with Proud Mary??? I was forced into playing this at my own gig last night and I never normally play it? Is it a local thing?

I had two gigs on last night which is unusual as "Basingstoke Discos" is normally just 'lil old me. However, the DJ that covered my other gig is pratically a clone and I've already had a glowing email from the happy client singing his praises. I'll be multi-op before you know it :)

My gig was a run of the mill 30th at a local venue that has recently been "refurbed?" (it still looks exactly the same apart from the bar has moved slightly and a few doors have been moved) it was a nice job, full show + uplighting.

As I have mentioned, it was a normal gig until the Birthday Girls boyfriend slipped on the dancefloor and smashed his face. His face escaped any visible signs of damage, but he had managed to knock out 3/4 of his front tooth. Ooooouch! It looked hideous.

Undetered, the 5 strong crowd MADE me play 5 or 6 tracks whilst packing down... Strange night as there was No tip? and No "you're the best DJ I have ever seen?" aaaaand I didnt hand out any business cards? :)

It features in Just Dance 2 for the Wii as a communal dance.
Very popular for the slow 'rolling' start and the speed up finish.

My point is for a track that is not "typically" in any of my playlists (should it be?) The track seemed to be "tunes of the night" for both Gary and I and our gigs were quite local to one another. Odd.

P.S Cotton Eye Joe? I must be listening to a different record :)

had a wedding last night, booked 7 to 12.

Last Wednesday i tried to call the bride to confirm details and get first dance info, no answer. tried again several times a day until Saturday when i gave up and called the hotel. Helpful manager assured me the gig was going ahead, but she'd been having trouble getting hold of the bride too.

Turned up at 6.15, but could not setup as the meal was still ongoing. Finally got in & setup by 7.30.

Trying to talk to the bride was hard work. This young woman seemed more interested in drinking than discussing her first dance, she wondered off mid conversation. Eventually i got an answer which was 'chris brown, without you'????

after a bit of head scratching, i had to ask her again, there is not song by Chris Brown called 'without you'. Eventually figured out she meant David Guetta's 'Without you'. Id have thought the bride would take a little bit of interest in her first dance, the groom didnt seem bothered either.

Next, we waited on more guests to arrive, there was only 20 for the meal, with 60 more due in. By 8.30 i was bored and only 15 more people had arrived, i suggested to the bride that we should get started. She reluctently agreed so we finally got the first dance done.

Following the first dance, the bride told me that she 'didnt want any old rubbish music played at all, just upto date stuff'. I tired to explain that i'd have to play some older music for the older people in the room, 'i dont care about them, just play new stuff' was her answer. The groom said 'have you got now 80?, just stick that on'!!!

I stuck the her wish, and didnt play anything older than 2010 the whole night, as a result no one under 30 danced at all, and most people had left by 10.30. For the last hour and a half, i had 10 people, standing by the bar, with no interest in dancing or requesting music.

I was so bored, i actually went for a 5 minute walk outside in the freezing cold, just to get away from them for a few minutes.

One of thoses gigs i just could wait to end.
