Good Gig, Bad Gig.

Well my weekend was as follows

Friday - Leaving party in a small Squash club, Was more of a gathering rather than a party with guests just talking and drinking HEAVILY, they were mostly my age and wasn't interested in dancing one bit but got my thanks at the end of the night and everyone got up for the last couple of songs.

Saturday - Did a wedding disco/karaoke in a Hotel/Hall in Wakefield which was a bad night to start off with but after we got the karaoke out of the way and they had a few more drinks it went well with a nice dancefloor right to the end.

Sunday - Had a christening on at a local sports centre that had been rebuilt, nice place the only problem was the function rooms were upstairs and you had abit of a trawl to get the gear in and out. As expected nobody danced so a nice selection of back ground music was selected and again lots of comments about the music and that they would reccomend me, The function room had windows all around and was very light so i took the risk and didn't use any lighting just a star cloth dj booth as you couldn't see the lighting at all and it was only a 1:00Pm - 6:00Pm booking.

Reading your post, Steve, I was gobsmacked as it could have been by me. I did a leaving/retirement disco on Friday at Durham Rowing Club clubhouse. It was someone who was retiring from the Education Department at Durham council and the top folk were there. They chose loads of cheesy stuff to dance to in the style of the old embarrassing parent (right up my street!).

Saturday was a wedding karaoke disco which got off to a bad start as we had another gig (a 30th birthday in a community centre about 7 miles away) which my brother and dad were covering. Our driver dropped me off at my gig (the rig had already been setup in the afternoon) and then left to go another function in Newcastle. I had my laptops to set up so I opened my cases and, to my horror, found I had the leads and power supply for not just my systems but also for the ones at the community centre! A quick call to a taxi company (I had 45 mins to spare), a return journey and £20 out of pocket later and I was ready to begin. All the folk there were from Robs neck of the wood (ie Surrey) which I thought was odd being only a few miles from Sunderland but they loved their karaoke so it turned in to a good night.

Sunday was a Christening (about our 8th this year with a few more to come) which went down well. It's was mostly really kids from toddlers to about 10 so I played lots of Lazy Town, CBBC/CBeebies/Disney Channel stuff along with loads of pop and it went down really well.

Bank holiday monday was a well-earned rest but I ended up taking 5 enquiries - 3 of which are now confirmed. So a good weekend all round!

Seems familiar, Steve, although I don't remember the soundtrack.

Maybe I popped to the kitchen at that point to make a cup of Horlicks.

Just got back from a 30th Birthday party, had a great night.
Only 3 people danced before the food was brought out, and i thought oh no here we go, but after they had finished the food the dance floor was full.
We ended with New york new york, and about 80 percent of the people in the hall in a circle ( promted by me ) linking arms and singing along.
We got a big hand at the end, what a great night, and very nice people.:)

Good gig for me this evening - one at a really smart village hall in the south of the county (Staffs) - and this was also a 30th birthday - and a surprise one - though the blokes mates had to bring him from the pub to the place as they'd all walked there on route and almost stayed put.

Food was - ready for this - a dozen take-away pizzas ordered in for 30 people, including me, plus garlic bread, chips, etc, and drink from a table - and I was told help yourself - nice fresh orange juice all night with ice!

Music was mainly Old Skool, some hip-hop, current stuff and whatever I wanted to play early on as most of the folks sat outside drinking and smoking and only came in when it had gone dark.

Was handy though - them being outside, as I've just picked up a Gemini XTR-400 for these kinds of jobs and it gave me a chance to put it through its paces. Lights were simply four Acme scanners, ProTwin and Chauvet Corona - didn't need any more than that for the size of the place.

Dancefloor full from about 10pm to midnight, plenty of thanks, paid early and got a 20 quid note in my hand after I'd finished too.

Bed now.

mare of a gig last night for a load of TA chaps and chapesses a wedding no less , supposed to start at 7pm due to over running only got access at 6.45pm to the room , up and running for 8pm ..... groom comes over at 8.15pm "we,ve changed the first dance is that ok, and can we do it after this track?" .....aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhh hhhh !!!! luckily i had the new track and being digital managed to cue it up in the 32 seconds remaining of the previous track .........

after that and another slowey went into dancing queen , barry white , jacksons etc ............ no one up , then young girl with my favourite all time request ... "have you got ANY modern songs at all?" , ok, so switched it and went into madonna, rihanna , flo rida annd the likes her and her mates danced which made 3 and a group of 3 other young girls (who knew every dance routine to every modern song ever in the world , who i thought must have a big mirror at home and very few friends) so played rnb modern dance for about half an hour 40 minutes.

Then thought , there is at least 7 bottles of wine on each table so maybe the grown ups are ready to shed their inhibitions so played Rick ............ to answer your question Rob , he is definately not cool again at all in Nottingham neither is any other 80s track apparently????

tried a bit of 60s .......... they sat and drank
tried a bit of motown ..... they sat and drank
trid a bit of old skool ...... they sat and drank
tried a bit of indie ..... they sat and drank

played dolly parton 9 to 5 ....... everybody got upto dance ........ then sat and drank

got to about 10.15pm ......... and you know the score the first person there with a young child plucks up the courage to say "ooohhh little johnny is tired and we are going to head off" followed within 30 seconds by everyone else in the room with a child (they were all tired though as i'd made them all do saturday night cha cha slide etc etc.)

went back to the modern stuff and had the same 6 girls up dancing as before , no requests all night except "modern songs"

by 12 midnight about 30 or so people left ...... 12.15am instruction comes from the roadie "kill the music!" so I did looking up to see at least 6 of the remaining audience trading fists , broken noses , cut eyes and a win by way of knock out followed, before several uniformed chaps threw people out in the literal sense.

on packing up though several people came and asked for cards shook my hand and asked about availability on various dates saying i did a spot on job with some great music .

the bar manager came over at the end and said "15 years ive run this bar for , and I've never seen one as bad as that"

after that titanic struggle having a leg chopped off isn't quite so daunting anymore :D :D :D :D :D :D

in fairness it wasn't a TA person that kicked off and all of the army people came over and apologised at the end for what had gone on and to see if we were ok which i thought was thoughtful of them.

I just really felt for the B and G who had invited (friends?????????) who had behaved in such a disgraceful way on their special day,

Sorry to hear about the mare you had Dave.

I can't begin to understand how anyone can ruin what's supposed to be the most important day in the life of someone they know / are friendly with / are related to.

It shows a complete lack of respect, and also shows that they probably don't deserve to be friends of the "happy couple"

Do you think that was a factor--the unusually hot weather-- not the booze.

Were there any requests prior to the function at all other than the first dance--which got changed :eek:

Where was the gig--so I can add this to my list to avoid;)

no no requests prior to the evening just "play a good mix of stuff" it was very warm now you mention it they had decked out a mess hall as kind of an indoor marquee looked really nice but it was warm, could well have been it i guess.
