Good Gig, Bad Gig.

So, I had 2 gigs at the same venue (Peacock in Goole) on Friday & Saturday night.

Well, I turned up on Friday about 1 hour early as I went there straight from work and was greeted by the landlord & landlady (John & Emily) who were a really nice and friendly young couple. I had a chat with them and found out they'd only been open about 1 month and prior to them being there the pub had got a pretty bad reputation for drugs and general riff-raff but they were trying their hardest to clean it up, however the amount of people they were getting in wasn't great just lately.

I guess this reputation (which I reckon may hang over this pub for a while) would explain the lack of punters. There was only about 12 people although they stayed all night, seemed to be having a good time and danced almost all night on-and-off, although I reckon the pub didn't make much profit after paying me.

It was a late night - I played til 1:30am which I wasn't quite expecting but I left most of my bulky gear in a locked room so that meant I could get away pretty quick. By the way, John & Emily kept me amply watered all night with free drinks (soft ones of course).

Anyway I wasn't expecting much better on Saturday night although they had a school reunion from 1968 coming in so I reckoned mainly 60's & 70's all night. So, 7:30pm came and around a dozen of the reunion people came in and sat as far away from me as possible (I couldn't even see them).

At around 9:00 a load of young men & women (guessing around mid 20's) came in and I was expecting the worse (Goole hasn't got the best reputation in these parts) but I was proven wrong, although a little rowdy they weren't any bother.

I asked the Emily (as she was bringing me a drink) where the reunion guests were and she said "oh, they left about half an hour ago and they we're really arrogant and rude" - bearing in mind they were 'of an age'.

Anyway, the young 'uns were well up for it and danced all night and I had some cracking requests (I'll dig out a play list later) which made for a very enjoyable (but late) night.

Feedback from both nights was excellent and they now want me to me to be a 'regular' dj doing at least 1 per month. It's not the best money in the world and the distance is a fair treck but I suppose regular work these days isn't such a bad thing - it'll keep the spare dates filled anyway.

They rang me yesterday and want me for the 14th April but I need to chat with them about more money first as I wasn't at home when they rang...

Did a Ladies Night for the Freemasons this weekend - totally out of my depth and totaly nailed it ;) 1 mistake was playing uninivted by the freemasons as a joke ( was requested by a younger table) - they did get it and I mixed it out within 20 seconds back to motown etc

Great gig last night. Did a Ska and Punk night at a local venue, who asked me if I would do this one off night for them. I must admit I originally knocked this back. For whilst I know a decent amount about these two genres. I wouldn't claim to be the definitive word in them. (If you know what I mean:D :D )

However after 10 mins think about it. I rang the pub manager back and said I would do it;) ;) and I'm so pleased I did:) :) Started off with some of the older Ska. Then moved into the 2 tone era and the requests came thick and fast (Must say thanks at this point thanks to Mr Jones and Mr Joyce for help here) and I was surprised at how many of them I had.

After 10pm I moved away from Ska and went into Punk via a bit of New Wave. After 12:00 it was all over. I couldn't believe how quick the night went.

I don't know if I'll ever get a chance to play another night like that again, but if I do I'll certainly drink to that. Got the funny feeling I might walk around with a silly smile on my face today:) :) :) :) :) :D :D :D :D

Excellent, Steve. In all the years I've been playing out ( and despite loving these genres), I have never had a specialist night playing them. One day.........

For me i was at the Ramada Hotel In Solihull..
I was doing a wedding for around 90 people and i was due to start at 7.30..
Turn around was at 6.30 but to my surprise they was ready at 5.40, so i could take my time.. I was finished for 6.50 setting up and the staff asked if they could come in early..I said yes no problem and i would just put some background music on..
1st Dance was at 8 and the bride and grooms son wanted to dance to party rock anthems striaght after, It went well and the dance floor was ok till 8.45 when buffet was ready..
I turned music down while they was eating and the venue gives them 1 hour to eat untill lights go off again..
At 9.45 i started with upto music, Rihanna, Maroon 5 etc but no luck..I thought oh no what wrong with them..
I then went on to 90s Dance and the place went mad..They loved it..Its the first time in a long while i have stopped on 1 genie all night..I did try coming out of it at one time but it did not work so i just carried on with 90s Dance and i must admit i loved it..It reminded me of Djin in clubs years ago..I finished at one with around 60 people left..
I given many cards out to customers and staff so overall excellent night

Sounds like a great night Steve, with the right audience you can't go wrong with bit of ska and punk, lots of energy in the music.

I was not given a playlist and told me to play whatever i think to keep dance floor busy and thats what i did..Also the groom was dancing to most of the songs
