External Hard Drive question

why not connect usb hdd to computer 1 and map it's driive so computer 2 can use it also, all you need is a crossover network cable and its totally secure, cost a couple quid.

Obviously manually set static ips (4s) in the 192.168.0.x range eg computer (1) 192.168.0.1 and computer (2) 192.168.0.2

Don't even need a crossover cable. You can save any outlay and just set up an ad-hoc wireless network between the two computers with the HDD plugged in to one. All you need to do is make sure you have "shared" the HDD (or you can just share specific folders with your music in).

Because in post 7 the OP alluded to the fact that the second laptop is a backup for the first. If operation of the second is dependent upon operation of the first (even if just for a couple of minutes) then it's not really a backup is it?

Yes thats right, If laptop 1 crashes then laptop 2 needs to be able to access the hard drive, if routed through laptop 1 then it would not work.;)

Like the look of the router, definate option as if one laptop crashed then still have access to hard drive from second laptop. :D
