I had a nice chilled out weekend really even though I was working. Sounds weird doesn't it.
It just seemed easy.
I had a 90s themed night at my local on Friday which was great. Expected it to be quieter than usual as a number of the regulars were away at a local festival, there was also a gig on up the road featuring 4 up and coming, well supported local acts and there was also a birthday party round the corner BUT we were busy and a number of people who said that they weren't planning on staying because they were going to go to the gig, ended up staying all night. It was great.
Saturday, I was at a venue I do regularly out of town for a 40th Birthday party. As I said, it just felt easy. For once, people were flooding me with requests and that kept the dance floor busy all night. Tested out the DJ foldable screen but forgot to take any footage of it. I'll use it again on Tuesday and make sure I get some pictures. The majority of music at the 40th was a mixture of Chart and 70s, 80s and it worked well.

This one came in just over a week ago and was an 80s themed night for a pharmaceutical company that were launching a new product. The slogan for the new product was "Get into your groove".
I had lots of correspondence with the organiser regarding the layout and timings of the night. I devised and provided an 80s Quiz for them and also used 80s Visuals. I also created a slideshow showing their new product.
The party was quite a small one for 40 guests who included their sales team from around the country and everyone had made the effort and attended in 80s Fancy Dress.
Started at 7.30pm with some 80s background music as they sat down to eat. The atmosphere was building already with guests getting in the mood and singing along as they sat at their tables. There were request slips on the tables and I was inundated with them which was great. I played almost every single one of them and they went down well.
The MD got up at 8.15pm to talk about the new product and then at 8.30pm I started the Quiz. It went down really well and the organiser provided prizes for the winning team and also for the best fancy dress. There were space hoppers and 80s sweets for the winners. By 9.15pm the Quiz was done and dusted and then it was 80s classics through until 11.00pm. Every single person (I know there were only 40 of them) danced to the majority of tunes that I was playing and before I knew it, it was all over. I had to finish at 11.00pm as they had a meeting planned for 8.00am this morning.
I am sure there will be lots of hangovers this morning but also some great feedback. I got thanked over the microphone by the MD and got cheered by everyone (even a dork that was moaning about me not playing his song which I have mentioned in the 'Client Abuse' thread).
Got asked for some cards by 3 guests and the hotel even asked me for one aswell. Had an email in the last hour from the organiser who said she will be in touch again towards the end of the year for a presentation night so all good.
Good earner too and more importantly, I was in my element. I loved it. I played what they wanted to hear (apart from one song) and could have played all night given the chance.
Following last night's prom, I am officially "Down wiv da yoof"

With blowing my own trumpet to much , the parents were over the moon with me , and not just the birthday girls parents , and it paid well.............
my only question is , where do they get there energy from.......

Friday Night - Did a Rock Night at my local which was great. Once again I thought it may be a bit quieter than usual because of the rain but also because there was an Iron Maiden tribute band called 'Hi On Maiden' playing up the road. The gig was packed apparently and the band were awesome but the pub was packed too and I got to play loads of good stuff, both old and new. Really enjoyed it.
Saturday's gig was a Wedding just out of town. Well, it was actually the reception. The couple got married at another venue and had their wedding breakfast there. They also cut the cake and did the wedding speeches and everything else there too and had a 2 hour break before the evening entertainment started at the Village Hall.
I set up early on Saturday morning with no problems whatsoever. The parking and loading situation wasn't great and the rain didn't help either but it was easier than I thought.
The venue is only a 15 minute drive from my house. I left at 6.45pm for a 7.30pm start and got there at 7.20pm due to the roads being flooded. Pardon the pun but I thought it may be a washout last night but it wasn't at all. It was almost as if the whole village had been invited to the reception. It was very busy.
I didn't manage to get any additional photos which is a shame because the venue looked fantastic once it got dark. Lilac Uplighting was already installed and I matched the screens to it too. I also had the Starcloth behind which actually worked well. I had a number of comments about the look of the set up which was nice because you don't expect people to just come up and say "That looks lovely" which they did.
It's funny, I've noticed in the past that when I have done Discos in villages, they've always gone down really well. It's almost as if everyone comes out of the woodwork and just wants to enjoy themselves. It felt like one of those occasions where everyone wanted a good knees up and they were dancing to near enough everything!
Current chart went down well, the 70s and 80s worked well too and so did the Cheese. They loved their Cheese and watching around 130 people doing Cha Cha Slide was great.
There was also a group of around 6 young guys there (probably about 15 years old?) who were all giving it the proper dance moves and I used them to my advantage. I found out from a guest (one of their mum's) that they all went to dance classes and I also saw one of them do the 'Inbetweeners' Dance so I thought I'd play 'We Speak No Americano' and announce over the microphone that it was for them. They loved it. They went out in to the middle of the dance floor and started doing the dance and everyone clapped and joined in, trying to copy them. Great atmosphere.
Anyway, a really good night and great end to a busy and tiring week.
I have to make a journey back shortly because I couldn't get all of the equipment out last night due to the guests milling around near the exit and it chucking it down with rain. Funny thing was, there was a kebab shop next door and when I was putting the small equipment I could get out back into the van, the kebab shop owner came out...
"Wha you wan?" He asked...
"Excuse me?"
"Wha you wan to eat matey?" He asked again...
"Oh, I'm ok thanks" (I don't eat kebabs).
"Lemme give you kebab. You play some good music matey!" He said.
I stood there getting soaked, wanting to get away and get home but he was very complimentary and I would've felt rude if I had just walked off. He told me that he'd had a quiet night but he could hear all of the music and had enjoyed it.
He ended up giving me a can of cold Dr Pepper as that's all I would take off him. Nice bloke.
I'm pretty positive that it won't be the last time I visit that venue.
A free kebab- if ever there was a sign of endorsement in our industry from someone who wasn't event at the gig then this is surely it.Quote:
