Good Gig, Bad Gig.

Well for me a mixed weekend
I was at longbridge Social club friday for a Doctors and nurses 25 years night. If you know this venue you will know the large room holds 400 people and very big. I was told all tickets was free but all 275 was sold. I decided to take my 605db with 2 905 rcf speakers and a good light and lazer show with my normal led curtains.
I was booked from 7 till 11.30 but i was on site from 4.30. I was set up and ready to go at 6.15.
A few nurses turned up at 6.25 to set up tables and the food.. To be honest they did not have a clue how to set the room up. They put the food by a radiator and tables and chairs was just put anywhere. They put 1 air filled balloon on each table, Why i do not know.
I started music at 7pm and at 7.35 the first guests arrived. At 8.30 there was 15 and food was to start at 9.. I was only playing back ground music and i could barely hear it myself but someone came over to me and told me to turn it down.. 5 mins later someone came over and told me to turn it up (it was like this all night)
At 9pm there was only 40 people there in a room which would hold 400 easy. I turned the music up once they had eaten and got half of them dancing. The woman who booked me was really happy with me and said sorry for some of the guests with the volume issue. She also said she would be me again (why i do not know because i charged her a fortune and only 40 people turned up)

Saturday night i was in tipton, Surprise 50th and it went really well. Around 120 guests and most stopped to the end. The staff behind the bar really chessed me off cause i was told to finish at midnight and they must have a switch behind the bar which cuts the electric off. At 11.50 they just switched all the power off, I knew what had happened and i had a little row with the manager of the club and the guest was not to happy with the club neither. I told the staff if you wanted me to finish earlier you should come over and told me. I told them to turn power back on to make sure there was no damage to equipment, lucky it was all fine. it left a bad tast in my mouth but i am back there later in the year and 2 more times next year.. But a good night overall

Well a wedding for me last night, and I was the merst tad apprehensive about the playlist. Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, Rammstein, Tenacious D ( Clean versions of their tunes take some finding!!!! ) Thunder, and the lightest was Bon Jovi, Van Halen and Guns'n'Roses. Chuck in a track or two from a chap called Rodriguez ( Sugar Man appearsto be the stand out track. ) and you can see why I was wary. It's local to me, and a tiny function room, so I set up early with the slimline Giraffe, two floorstanding cabs and an EFX500 and two pars on the overhead. As soon as the room was deemed fit, we let the punters back in. Except, not many, cos the bar in the main pub had the beer and lager pumps everyone was drinking, and real fires in both rooms. Eventually, I got the first dance under way at 9pm ( Metallica-Without You ) and shortly after, announced the buffet. Which was as far away from me as it was physically posible, three rooms and two corridors away! Magic.

After playing the first two off the list, we ripped up the playlist, and went into standard wedding mode, with the wildest request being The Passenger-Iggy Pop. Loads of chart and cheese, just like any other. I slipped the Rodriguez track in, as it was for the Bride's brother. I hadn't listened to it all beforehand, and from a really bland, innocuous ditty at the start, it descends into electronic freefall! Apart from playing two Rammstein tracks for the Groom's mother, we had nothing untoward, and I packed up after de-icing the van at half one. Blimey it was cold.

Easy one yesterday , 11 year old girls birthday , set up in kitchen ( yes , a very big house) near Midhurst ,Sussex, played from 4:00pm until 6:30pm , couple of games , short break for some food , chart music and the old favorites like cha cha slide , macarena .
I was booked by the parents for a house cooling party in April next year ( they are selling up), and one of the guests mother booked me for her daughters 12th next year. wish they were all like that..

I don't normally blow my own trumpet & I can count on the fingers of one hand the amount of times I've posted in this thread (including starting it), but I have to comment on the absolutely fantastic wedding I did on Saturday & to thank Martin (funkymook) for passing it our way. It was for a quite young couple who both Angela & I got on with instantly at our meeting with them (the day after my crash & second meeting of the day, 2 of the friendliest people you could want to meet & they brought me out of my state of shock).

Absolutely packed dance floor for most of the night & a fairly good one for the remainder. Only one track cleared the floor & even that one brought half a dozen back to the floor by the time it was half way through.

The plan was to pick & choose from the playlist & take additional requests on the night. I ended up playing the whole lot plus about 3 requests. It had the potential to bomb (hence the pick & choose + requests plan), but with the crowd I had it was nigh on perfect, with only a handful of folks that didn't dance at all.

The playlist (& the reason Martin passed it on to us when he realised he couldn't do the date they wanted) is as follows:

Regarding this thread... I wish others would do gig reports. I sometimes wonder whether to or not as I don't want to come across as bigging myself up too much. I just find them interesting to read.

I wasn't having a pop at regular posters in this thread, I just feel a little embarrassed (for want of a better word)posting about mine, so consequently I only post for exceptional (good or bad) gigs. I enjoy reading about other's exploits though.

Thought you might like it Gary. So much for younger crowds only wanting R&B, Dance & Dubstep though (eh Paul?:p)

Only kidding, of course. I've re-read the Do Not Play list again, and I wouldn't have a problem with that. Quite a few of the songs and artists are very unfamiliar to me, but I loved the inclusion of Louie Louie, and Betty Everett's version of It's in his Kiss.

No optical aids needed at all, thank you very much. On re-reading my post, I will readily concede that I did not make myself clear at all. My mistake. I was trying to convey that I would not be happy to perform with such tracks proscribed , and I would not undertake a function shackled thus. ( Which was an attempt at humour, for I am renowned as being prepared to play whatever the customer does or doesn't want. The negotiability of my musical virtue is well known. )

I'll use more smilies next time.
