I always have that talk before the day itself if I have any concerns about the music - it usually takes careful handling to get people to agree to relax their strict playlist.

I'd like to see a copy of it though if you have it in a easy copy and paste format.

I always phone up customers a day for 2 before there event and he was happy with the music, it was not untill i was at the venue and 60% of his guests was over the age of 60 i had concerns. He also confirmed the access times into the venue over the phone at the same time.

I am not saying its a all bad play list but once you seen the guests you may understand where i was coming from.

The oft debated fine line between slavish performance of a task, and editorial freedom. Thi is an imperfect world, and sometimes we have to accept the hand we've been dealt. I suspect Martin leans more towards stacking the deck in his favour. :D There are no right or wrong answers.

SS - I don't personally see anything wrong with that playlist.
If anything I would say that the Groom has aired on the side of caution and provided a list of 'alternative' tracks that are pretty well known and ones that he may have thought would have appealed to his guests. That is pretty watered down in my opinion.
Obviously none of us were there but you have mentioned that if we had seen the guests we'd understand. Tracks like 'Just Can't Get Enough' by Depeche Mode (as an example) are not really going to put that many people off in general in my opinion.

Some people you just can't please...simple as that.

Yes agreed and as i stated not a bad playlist and depeche mode would normally get guests dancing or even moving there feet but not with this party.
I think it was mainly because there was many older guests and they would not dance to indie etc. They was asking me for Motown and Party but groom said No way because he does not like it..
As you said some people you can not please and i normally do not get many bad gigs but this was one of them.

Discussing the guests and their tastes is the main objective with any playlist you think won't appeal to the majority - a couple of days before the wedding when they have everything else to contend with is not the ideal time to be discussing the music with the B&G, you need to do it much earlier in the process.

I always just for any playlist at least 10 days before the event (i state this on booking forms)
This play list came 5 days before there event and as i have stated i did not really have a problem with the list until i seen the guests.
About contacting the b&g much earlier, i have never in 20 years in the business had any problem with the way i do things.
There are many djs i know who never contact the b&g at all.
As i said just one of those bad gig where i am sure we have all had in the passed

Last Saturday I had a surprise 50th Birthday Party at a venue that is new to me. I called in during the week just to introduce myself and check the venue out and was told by the manager that they were newly in the venue and the DJ they had inherited was packing up and would I be interested in doing work for them? Too right I would.
I arrived a little bit earlier to set up than I normally do, just to make sure everything was tidy, and that's where things started to go Pete Tong. Last time out I used my new controller and new speaker cables and somehow I managed to mix up my dmx and speaker cables,which meant my lights on the other side of the dancefloor werent responding and the speaker over there wasn't working either. By the time I got everything working properly and looking tidy, it was a few minutes before the Birthday guest was due to arrive......talk about cutting it fine!
I didn't even have time to change my shirt before the party started and had to wait for abut 20 minutes before I could freshen up.
The party went very well and I got a lot of positive comments from the guests AND the staff but I came away from the party feeling a mixture of stress and could have made a better first impression.
