40th Birthday.....7:30 till 12, Birthday boy wanted 80's.....so played quite a few of those. No one dancing, moved it around a bit, still no one on the dance floor.
Buffet served and finished......put some up beat tracks on, still no one! :eek:
11 o'clock.....Summer 69 (works every time).....3 on the dance floor....just for the one track.....
Don't stop till you get enough....another faller.....few dance tracks at the end 10 people on the floor......

Had an unusual one last night, a British Legion Veterans' Day. Black tie event and got the comment it was nice to see all 3 of us dressed for the occasion.
Rules were: early on music from 40's, so we gave them some big band, Andrews Sisters and other wartime hits. They like ballroom and line dance so mixed it up with cheese for the later part. Packed floor of line dancers for Mavericks, Billy Ray Cyrus etc and a good number for quicksteps & waltzs.
Instead of shadow dancers, ran some dvds of archive war films on screen which got a lot of reaction. I've known people to stop dancing for various reasons, but it was the first time they stopped to see if they were on the film of the D-Day landings. :whistle: Got so many enquiries, I had to stop the music to tell them where to buy the dvd. (Good old ASDA! :thumbs_up: )
We also made a dvd slide show of archive photos from WWI, WWII, Northen Ireland, Falklands, Afghanistan, Bosnia and Iraq wars, veterans marching, including Chelsea Pensioners and ending with a view of the massed veterans surrounding the Cenotaph, which we showed to Land Of Hope And Glory. That got a big round of applause as the vets also included people who had been in the later conflicts.
They really appreciated our going the extra distance to make it a special night. They have already called today to make more bookings for the club and we took 2 confirmed bookings and a provisional booking for private functions last night.
It always pays to make a little effort to please. :thumbsup:

I normally do speak with the clients to find out what they do and dont want but this one was a very late booking and was booked by a friend of a friend whos 21st id done earlier in the year, i didnt even have a contact name which was a bit worrying! thanks for your comments though im definatly gonna make sure it doesnt happen again:confused:Quote:

Bad start but turned out really well tonight. First time out with the cortex (mentioned in another thread).
Awful hotel to setup in. On 3rd floor and you share a lift with the staff. Band also playing and we all can't get in till half hour before am supposed to start. Knew about this from contacting the hotel earlier in the week so B&G knew I may be a bit late.
Get my kit up and the band has hired a guy to do the PA and he has taken the whole wall up where we are all supposed to be.(don;t know how he got in earlier). Asked where I was supposed to go and he said word that cannot be typed on this forum. Basically he did not give a poo as all that matters is the band a disco is not important. Was told to set up in a bay window so small even the micromax stand would not fit in.
Anyway managed, but was facing totally the wrong way with the crowd to the side of me. Put a background cd on whilst going to change, lock the van etc. Came back and silence, the PA guy had turned it off so he could check his sound system.
Turned out really good however with a full dancefloor most of the night and loads of compliments. When the band done their 2nd set groom asked them to stop earlier and asked if I would not mind 'filling in'.
I start again and dancefloor full. The band and PA guy start packing away and kept walking through dancefloor with equipment. The monitors for the band were on the dancefloor so asked if he could move them so more people could dance. Response similar to before. In the middle of the party dances so I decided to do the hokey cokey - The monitors soon shifted then.
All in all though the crowd really enjoyed, I felt awkward as did not look right where setup but as long as everyone enjoyed it thats the main thing.
Mental note : add a point in T&C about space required.
I've had a couple of problems with "live" acts before. But most of the bands I've worked with have been really good and we've worked together well. Suppose it helps that I used to manage and promote bands so I know exactly how to deal with them! Some club singers can be a pain in the bot though!
Chris, which band was it? And which hotel? I've done a couple locally but only one before that a few floors up and that was in Gateshead.

Bit of a strange one for me last night.
Start time was 630pm, so started to play some background music which was supposed to go on until the first dance at about 8pm, but the best man came up and said they wanted to have there first dance in 5 mins, this was at 650pm.
So they had there first dance, then it was straight into some latino music which was planed when i took the booking. There were about 20 people dancing (only about 45- 50 guests) to the latino music, one couple were verry verry good dancers. there was a great feel to the place at this time.:)
So after about 45 mins of this type of music moved into some 70s, 80s, 90, and present chart stuff, which seemed to go down well. Then after the buffet ( with some more background music, there were only 6 or 7 people dancing, i asked for requests, but only got 3 of them.:(
Then at about 10pm some of the guests started to go, leaving only a handfull of people dancing. At the end the bride and groom came over and thanked us.
So where as you usually get people dancing later and getting more and more into the party mood, this started full on and then started to slow down.
Nice people though, and the staff were nice to.:)
