It was 40th wedding anniversary at a RC church Hall about 10 miles from my house for a couple I’ve known for years. The start time was 7 but I got there for 5.30 so I could take my time and not be rushing ( I’d spent all day helping run a DJ workshop on the top deck of a converted double decker bus as part of a community out-reach scheme) so I was pretty knackered by this point.
I introduced myself to the caretaker/barman, asked about use of smoke, all ok, and if they had a sound limiter, he said he didn't even know what one was! :)
At this point I was thinking I was going to be in for a great night.
The crowd was a strange mix of over 60's and loads of young kids; far more kids than there were people of parenting age for them. There was hardly anyone in their 20 – 40’s.
The kids spent the first hour running around, sliding on the floor and trying to sneak up onto the stage and scare me, so I played loads of Disney and kid friendly stuff, the adults where all catching up and talking.
After the buffet the kids settled down and the couple kicked off the dancing with lady in red. I had everyone up (about 70 in total) for the next two tracks and then they all sat down. It was like they had all decided at the start of the night to do two dances and that was it.
I tried everything, worked my way through the years and genres, asked for requests and no-one was getting up, plenty of them were doing the 'chair dance', but never making it onto the dance floor. This was just after 9pm and I was booked till midnight and stating to lose hope.
Things didn't really improve; I had some luck with a few 60's hits that got a couple of people up for about 20 minutes, but that was about it.
Anyway at about 11 most people started leaving so I wound down at about 11.15. The couple came up to me afterwards and said it had been fantastic and everyone had really enjoyed themselves and the music I had been playing.
I think they were just one of those crowds that doesn’t dance much, but it really started hitting my confidence, I kept thinking is it me being crap or just them not wanting to get into it.
But if they all enjoyed themselves then I suppose I did what I was there to do.
