Define cheese.
It's a term that means something different to everyone. I wouldn't call Mr. Brightside cheesy, for example, but Justin does. Who's right and who's wrong?

I have a wedding in August with a "no-cheese" policy. So, when I met up with them a couple of weeks ago, I asked them to define cheese.
Basically, so long as I don't play anything by Abba (I wouldn't personally count them as cheese) or YMCA, I'm good to play whatever I want to.
Another one recently pretty much wrote off the whole of the 70's and 80's as being cheese. Things like Erasure and the Communards were complete no-go areas.
An American wedding I did at the end of March, and an Anglo-French one a couple of weeks ago completely lapped up the entire cheese counter and still wanted more (and there's foreign cheese as well don-cha-know such as C'est Soiree La and the Electric Slide).
The thing that really annoys me......it's that stuff which works week in, week out in these parts. OK - I don't go in for the YMCA/Agadoo lark unless I'm specifically asked for it, and certainly not Superman unless it's a kids party, but the classics from the 60's through to the 80's are the main staple, plus a smattering of the newer things like Mr Brightside and Uptown Funk.
To be honest, I could get away with taking no more than a couple of hundred tracks out every single week and not be asked for anything obscure.
Maybe it's just the people in my area? Maybe it's the type of gigs I take on (I tend to do weddings and older birthdays/family get-togethers....avoiding 18ths/21sts unless I have to do them).

hmm the Term cheesy in the dictionary (informal)
cheap and of low quality.
I prefer the term corny (
clichéd, predictable, stereotyped).
This is actually what people expect from a disco. To play all of the tunes that they hear on the radio, tv and have on their iphones (god knows we get enough pushed in our faces).
All these "cheesy" songs got so much play because people asked for them and DJs obliged.

Last night I was at a very nice hotel just 5 mins drive up the road. Lovely place, permanent marquee, easy ish access but a bit of a walk from the van to the set up area. I am sure a few of us down South have been there. I've been there many times and had some really good bookings in there in the past but last night's? Well, I was glad to get away to be honest.
The booking was for the autistic school that I provide a Christmas disco for every year. It wasn't for the kids though, it was billed as a graduation ball and was a night for the teachers that had been training who had.....er.....graduated! 47 people in a large marquee looked a bit strange for starters. A mix of ages (and obviously tastes too as I would find out).
The Disco was to run from 9.00pm - 11.00pm after the presentations and buffet. I'd arranged with the hotel to set up at 5.00pm and provided a background music system whilst I wasn't there. When I turned up at 8.45pm they were just finishing the buffet.
So, 47 people attended and by 9.30pm that number had halved already. Even though I was only doing 2 hours I thought "This is going to be a long night".
I started off with some current stuff which had a pretty mediocre response and then the principal came over and asked for The Communards - Don't leave me this way. It got a few people up so I stuck with the 80's for a moment. Someone else came over and asked for some party 'cheese' so I added a bit of that in and again, a few people got up.
I could see people leaving every now and then and at around 10.00pm I actually counted 15 people left. I actually felt a bit embarrassed standing there trying to be enthusiastic. It was also interesting to note that a lot of the guests that had left were the younger ones and the people that were left were the staff and teachers that I see every year.
Someone asked for Backstreet Boys so I put it on and the dance floor cleared apart from the lady that had requested it. She was loving it and dancing away singing her head off. I was approached by a small, stern looking woman who didn't look too happy.
"Excuse me, can you play something a bit more up to date?" She shouted.
"Of course" I replied "What would you like?"
She didn't tell me what she wanted to hear at first and proceeded to slate the music and other guests saying that the music was ancient and the rest of the guests were boring....(I mentioned this to the lady that booked me later on and was told that this particular lady was one of the teachers and was quite hard to please......yeah! didn't I know it!).
In the end she asked if I could play some Maroon 5. I made sure I told her (politely of course) that I had (a) Already played some current stuff earlier but the response was lacklustre, (b) Everything I had been playing had been requested and (c) I wasn't a mind reader and people that weren't requesting songs and not getting up should be telling me what they want to hear. She took it all on board and gave me the thumbs up as she danced away.
At 10.45pm there were 3 people left and they were starting to get their coats on. I asked them all to pick a song each and I'd play it. 2 of them did it and the other 1 left.
It was definitely one of THOSE nights and that's about all I can say about this particular booking. It was a decent paid booking and an 'extra' in my eyes with it being midweek but I wouldn't want too many of those as they are soul destroying if I am honest.
Often the case with midweek bookings though isnt it? Many people have work the next day and don't/wont party. I have been there and I do feel for you. As you say though it is a bit extra in the bank!
