I had a Tuesday night American wedding at the back end of March where the guests had flown in on the Monday/Tuesday and wasn't expecting it to do much. It seems it doesn't matter what you play, they'll be up and dancing. That was one of the best nights I've had this year :)
Damn those other guests for intervening before you had a chance to somersault over your stand, stunning your opponent with a jab, taking him down with a judo style leg sweep before picking him up again and launching him through a window. That's totally what would have happened, right?Quote:

Had a great gig on Saturday night playing house music and dropping in plenty of Balearic anthems. Happy birthday to me, thought I! I spent a lot of my time trolling my other DJ mates by taking pictures of the songs I was playing on Traktor and sending those pics to them via WhatsApp. I'm more than happy to play Chicane's Saltwater, Jurgen Vries' The Theme and plenty more like that whilst they were sending me pics of them playing Cheerleader and Uptown Funk. Nowt wrong with those songs (I actually still like Uptown Funk), but I think I won the wedding lottery there. I even think that I'm starting to improve taking pictures of the setup.

Only a short synopsis from me of the last 10 days. Been decorating all week and back now in the day job with a huge list of work.
Last friday I was booked by a friend from my hobby days to do his wedding (as a surprise as I knew many of the guests and hadn't seen them for years). So my van which had just 300 miles on the clock from me had that doubled as I trekked down to Nottingham, to the walled gardens in Beeston.
A permanent marquee with the limiter from hell. I sneakily taped over the mic/sensor and still managed to pop it before the main disco started. As this was a good friend I serenaded them after the first dance, got all the way to the big final note. Pop again. All in all however it went down great, was a full floor for most of the night - got some nice photos for the website and saw some old friends.
I stayed over then travelled directly to my next venue as I had the chance to set up early. Finding the venue was a pure mission as its not on the satnav but once I did got the stuff in and set up and met the client. It was an 80th birthday but the woman liked new music, however the multitude of kids at the party chose practically every song. And I was really humbled to receive a standing ovation as I closed the night.
After this on friday just gone it was a 40th for another friend. The lad had made a facebook group for the event with 137 confirmed attendees - 40 turned up. He only opened half the buffet, was gutted for him, Not to let the occasion go to waste however we cracked on and had some really good singers on the karaoke and right funny knees up afterwards. I would have said in our youth he was a lot more popular than me but I had well over 80 attend my 40th so I guess times have changed.
Finally saturday night was down in Juski land at the kings hotel doing a wedding and it was a pure belta. Its a horrible setup but I had the whole ball room for a change and a crowd that wanted to dance and dance and dance and dance. Lovely couple who tipped me at the end of the night and promised some good feedback. So 4 gigs and 4 positive experiences, but i do not have a wonky spherion.

The Kings is a nice venue. Never played there myself. Yet.
Saturday for me was a mixed bag. Lovely sunny evening so I had the room almost to myself until 11pm! I think, apart from them all coming in for the first dance, introducedby the best man from hell, I counted 14 as the most I had in out of a total count of around 70. To be fair, the bride and her mates were in dancing a lot,but as soon as they tired, off they went again.
At least the windows were open so the music filtered outside and the ankle biters had enough space to tire themselves out in.
Talking of the best man, he hadn't endeared himself to the Wedding Host (who's name was Linda) by callingher Elaine all day! Anyway, once he'd done the first dance (and caled me the most amazing DJ ever), I only saw him once again!
The bad bit was around 1135pm as I was just getting ready to do last orders when there was a sudden rush for the exit for the groom and most of the remaining guests.
Apparently his best mate (who for some reason was not the best man) had collapsed outside. Ambulance duly called (while I was blissfully unaware and playing loads of 90's dance tracks for the bride & her mates) and he was tended to. Stories vary but the groom said t hat he had collapsed short of breath, pain in chest and arm and had been sick. That sounded very familiar to me, as the owner of one heart attack last year. So I told the bride and groom not to worry as he would be in good hands at the local hospital and told them "look at me now". He was a bit shell shocked but Mrs Bride thanked me for the reassurance and said she would let me know how he was.
Normally I would ask the B&G to reprise their first dance but it didn't seem right somehow so, in conjunction with the wedding host (the best man was nowhere to be seen by this time) we slowly let it fizzle out.
Of course I wouldn't Benny ;)
A few years ago though, definitely. Sometimes a look and not saying anything does the trick however I did shout at him because I'd already had a stressful start to the wedding with the speaker or cable problem and I had a split second to grab the bottle from his hand.
I've tested everything in the living room for the past half hour (it's still set up) and everything seems ok?
I don't understand it. I even played the Etta James track that I was playing at the time I noticed the problem and it all sounds fine? Swapped the cables from the Denon to the mixer first - No problem? Swapped the XLR leads to the speakers - No problem?
I can't replicate what was happening so it is very confusing to say the least. I've got to pack it all up and load it back in the van and set up for tomorrow's wedding shortly so at least I can have another soundcheck whilst I am there.
I even got the other mixer out (DN X400) just incase it was the mixer. That's always in the van anyway but it's the pain of having to change it over in a live situation that is stressful isn't it.

Funny that. I had a weird audio problem on Saturday. The bass was distorting. Not much but enough for me to notice. Anyway come buffet time I was all ready to swap the mixer out (my mic sounded great still) so I decided to try a different input. Problem solved & just for giggles later on I absolutely pounded the pa (by my normal standards) & it was still good.
The mixer is a Cichronic CDM8:4 & isn't mine. I'm going to invest in a Denon I think. Problem with that is I'm also going to need a new flightcase. Gah
I soundchecked at the venue for at least 30 minutes and still couldn't replicate the problem?
This morning and reflecting on last night with a clear(ish) head, I thought it might be something to do with one of the IEC power leads but then rubbished that idea as when I was on the right hand side of the Denon or using VDJ everything sounded fine? Again at the hotel, same thing....everything sounded fine. I did my best to try and achieve the same result but couldn't.
Deep down I think it IS the mixer (Denon DN X500), the thing is, I have it on channel 8 for the Denon right side. I tried it on 7 and 6 and it was the same on headphones and output through speaker. I swapped it into another one and it was fine yet at home and also at the hotel there were no problems. I am STILL confused!!!
Something will need looking at that's for sure and after tomorrow's wedding I have the rest of the week off so I WILL get to the bottom of it all.

I tried the same input as I had bother with the other night again tonight.. and it was fine. Go figure.
Tonight saw me working the last of four weddings in 7 days.. and I think I've just about made it through the wall.
I arrived just before 6pm & the party were still having their main course. Tsck! Hotel staff were less than optimistic about this crowd being much for a party. "We'll see", I said. "We'll see". Time ticked on, the staff got to turn the room around at 7.30 & I set up in record time. I must say it's getting much easier.. I think that's God's way of telling me I need to buy more gear ;)
Anyway, first dance was Prince Royce - Stand By Me. At 8.45pm. Not my favourite cover of that particular classic song, but the bride had been working with the groom (who doesn't dance) & they put on quite a show for everybody. The guests really didn't need any encouragement to applaud them at the end of the song either.
We had a bit of a plod towards 9pm when the buffet opened.. and I put my 80s soul BG autopilot DJ thing on.. turned my back about to leave the room & I saw the floor was FULL. Bugger. There goes my cig break then! Rather than try to put them off with Lady Gaga or whatever (Beyonce's 'bootylicious' is pretty good at clearing a floor for buffet time too, I find) I persisted with the 80s soul & branched out a bit.. figuring I had nowt to lose cos it was buffet time.. every track was a hit. The guests being pretty up for it helped mind.
I gave everyone else a chance to grab a bite to eat & started winding things up towards party mode again. A request came in for 'Beggin' by Madcon - to my shame I've never slung it on at a wedding or otherwise but that really got things started up. From there we went absolutely cheesetastic & I slowly worked my way to the 1990s where I ended up doing a mini 90s dance set including Reel To Reel, Motiv8 (!!) & even the Motiv8 Discoid remix of Pulp's Disco2000. That mix of the song has a very special place in my heart for reasons I won't go into here (but she was worth it).
A journey to the town of Mo, then Rock & Roll.. then just Rock.. and and and.
At 11pm, suddenly more than half of the guests decided they needed their beds. I persisted & we drew things to a close a little earlier than usual.. ten to midnight. More people asked for my card... DAMNIT! (I'll have them tomorrow.. WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!).
No more discos now til Friday, when I'm DJing a 21st birthday party which apparently promises to be quite a leery event. One lucky girl & over 100 of her closest friends no less. No info yet.. I'm just hoping it's not going to be bouncetastic. But if it does go that way I'll be ready with my chav DJ hat :D <censored> it.. if you can't beat em.. join em!
Quite possibly. The good news is that much of an X-500 is " user serviceable". I had a poorly fader on mine, and it caused problems all over the place, with things appearing where they shouldn't be. Swapped the fader, and totally cured. Others on here are well versed in these matters.Quote:
