Well, last night's booking......what can I say!!?
I don't think I have ever met someone so absolutely selfish and pathetic in all my life!
The booking was a wedding at my hotel residency. The couple booked me last year as they attended a birthday party I had done at the hotel. A very nice couple actually and it transpired that the bride used to work with my Mum a few years ago.
At our recent meeting to go over everything it also transpired that she is the step sister of a family friend of ours who we have known for 35+ years so I knew there would be some familiar faces there too.
One thing the groom (in particular) said to me when I asked if there was anything they didn't particularly want to hear music wise on their big day was "Please, no matter how many times you asked, do NOT play Hey Jude by The Beatles". Not a problem for me at all and I assured them both that I would not play the song. He revealed that the brides sister always hassled the DJ at every party and event they went to because her name was Jude and it "always had to be about her" so he said that just for once, on his special day, he didn't want to hear it. Again, not a problem for me at all. The bride did mention that her sister was very "forthcoming" and also very "insistent" and "persistent"..... Right, ok.
So, as with every booking I take, after the meeting I transfer all of the details to a separate DJ sheet. This is so that I or anyone covering a booking for me knows exactly what is required of them...timings, announcements, specific requests and what to stay away from. It is also a kind of back up for me so if anyone does come over and ask for anything that is on the do NOT play list I can show them and 99.9999% of the time it works. They say "Oh, ok no problem" or "Fair enough" and that's it but last night....... Oh dear! Last night was one to put in the "How to instantly :Censored:someone off" category.
When I was setting up in the morning the bride and groom actually turned up to drop some sweets off and I chatted with them and showed them the uplighting colour so that I could make sure they were happy. The groom said to me that "she" had already been on "his case" telling him that she was looking forward to a bit of Hey Jude and he'd told her "The DJ has been told not to play it" - She obviously thought he was joking!!! When I arrived at the venue at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start I started off with some nice chilled out reggae and acoustic stuff (they love the reggae). The room started to fill up and just before 8.00pm I was approached by a pretty looking girl.
"Are you taking requests?" she asked. Before I even had a chance to answer she said "Play Hey Jude for me".
"Uh Oh!" I thought. "You must be Jude then" I asked and she nodded. I picked up the DJ sheet and showed her where it said do NOT play 'Hey Jude'. I apologised to her and told her that I was sorry but the couple didn't want to hear it. She stood there open mouthed as if I had told her that her cat had been run over (if she had a cat? I don't know?). She was steaming. You could see it. She wasn't happy at all. "Excuse me!!??" she shouted.... I told her again that the bride and groom didn't want to hear it on their special day. ":Censored: them!!" she said... "Just play it!"... I told her No, I wasn't playing it because I didn't want to upset them...."It's only a song" she said.... "Exactly!" I replied...."Sorry, but I am just doing what I am told". She looked at me in disgust as if I was the one that had run over her cat (if she had a cat?).
She stormed off back to her table and I could see her shouting and pointing in my direction. Everyone on the table was looking in my direction and as the song playing started to fade out I am sure that when I read her lips she'd called both me and the groom a "pair of :Censored:". I wasn't impressed with that at all.
IT IS JUST BLOODY MUSIC!!!!!!
Just as I could understand that the bride and groom didn't want to hear it on their big day. I could also understand why she was a bit gutted.....well, that's an understatement big time! Most couples are so adamant and usually say something like "Don't go out of your way to play such and such but if someone requests it then we don't mind" - This wasn't like that. There was absolutely no way on earth that they were backing down. It was their day and they were insistent on it not being played. I say 'they'...but it was the groom mainly. He actually told me to play her another Beatles track but I ignored that and stayed away from it because I just thought it would make things worse. I was amazed to see her screaming and shouting at the bride and then getting her stuff together and leaving the room.
The groom came over and asked if I was ok. He didn't have a clue what had gone on and I kept him up to date and explained that I was sure I had been (we both had been) called the 'C' word. All of this hassle over just one song because someone couldn't get their own way..... I thought it was pathetic.
Anyway, the actual night itself (once that was all out of the way) was pretty good with lots of dancing and a real mix of 70's Disco, Motown, R&B and a few Ska and Rock tracks. There was a scattering of current chart but not much.
The Jude girl appeared on the dance floor during the evening and when I saw her heading my way I gulped, breathed in and prepared myself for another battering.
She'd had a few drinks now and was once more insistent and kept asking me to play the song. I was starting to get annoyed but kept my cool. I told her that at the end of the day, I was just doing what I was told. I didn't know what the problem was and I didn't want to know but it was their special day and I wanted to keep them happy.
She said she didn't have a problem with me and understood. Then she asked for the microphone so she could sing it and I said "Sorry, no". Then a guy came over who I assumed was her husband and shouted at me to "Just play the :Censored: song!". I told him exactly the same thing and they kept on and on and on and then that was it.
They were both hassling me and shouting at me so I just said "Look, stop! There is no way I am playing the song. I've said that a 100 times tonight. It is not my problem at all. I am just doing what I have been asked to do". They walked off and that was the last hassle I had from them. The groom came over, asked if everything was ok and I told him that there were no problems at all but inside I just wanted to scream out loud. The family friends were sent over a bit later to try and influence me and that didn't work either.
The disappointing part came after the last song (Louis Armstrong - What A Wonderful World).... The bride and groom couldn't thank me enough as they'd had a "lovely time" but the bride felt the need to apologise for her step sister. I told her there was no need to apologise and she started getting very upset. I told her that I was sticking to what they had told me and that I hoped it hadn't spoilt her evening and she told me that unfortunately, it had. I was gutted for her.
I've never really been in that situation before where someone is that selfish and insistent that just one song not being played can spoil their night which in turn ends up spoiling someone elses..I thought it was disgusting.
Like I said though, apart from that.....it was a good night.
