I got the impression that a lot of the guests (and the B&G) were 'chavs'. You know the type, unruly kids running amock and they were horrible children, wanting to go behind the DJ stand all the time and poking and pulling the LED's on the frontage. Did the parents tell them off - I don't even think they knew their kids were there.

I had a few up dancing to some 60's-70's after the buffet (around 8:30ish). Then the groom came up and asked if I could play some 'Ibiza' style dance music (much to my dissapointment).

I loaded up a history playlist i did for a wedding a few weeks ago which wanted similar stuff, and proceded to play this. As you would expect, cleared the dancefloor. I had a quiet word with the Groom and he insisted I keep playing this style of music (I had been paid at the start so who was I to argue?).

The worst incident of the night which could have resulted in a claim against me was when one of the speaker cabs toppled over :eek: :eek: :eek:

One of the subs that Peter lent me seemed to have a 'soft' top (maybe got damp, I don't know) although I didn't realise at the time of setting up.
One of the kids ran past it and knocked it, then my top speaker (on a pole) leaned forward and slammed onto the dance floor, taking the sub down too. It pulled the top hat out of the sub and ripped the screws out. (sorry Peter). It all kind of happened in that 'film style' slow motion where I could see it going but couldn't get to it in time! :(

Bad points: horrible music, no dancing, an accident and chucking it down. :(

Good points: free drinks, free food and the manager helping me out with my gear at the end. :)

Doing the same venue a week on Saturday (for Peter again) - hopefully NOT chavs :mad: and I think I'll take my own subs!

Justin! :eek: Chavs? At one of my residencies? Wash your mouth out. :D :D
Don't worry about the subs, they will have a refit before the next time, and they will be stronger than new. ;) :D

i now have a single gig left before retirement and ok im sorry but ill admit it as im big enough to do so and get spanked and shouted at but the last two gigs the retiring has been at the front of my mind and i have not surpressed the "well what are you going to do if i fluff up tell everyone im rubbish" thoughts quite as much as i used to as im not taking any more bookings , yes i have been professional and smart and done everything the same as i always have just not been hung up if it all goes pear shaped as "ive only got 3 weeks left" yes wrong attittude totally i agree.


but with this new slightly lighter attitude and not so much scrutiny of every little detail ..... ive had two of my best gigs ever??? just makes you wonder if it is possible to put too much emphisis on the wrong things.

in a way i feel i have tapered my personality to fit a model of what a professional should be and do and say within a gig setting and the last 2 ive reverted to cheeky dragon that can get away with saying and doing things that most people get beaten up for saying and doing and slated on the forum for doing by some not all .... but some ..and its had fantastic results????

Dave, don't know if this helps, but my advice, which I guess you've worked out for yourself, is : Be Yourself.
There is no one-size-fits-all formula for every disco and operator. ;)

Bad gig: one of my helpers trips over cables on sound board. I go to plug it back in and then was electricuted by a sound cable! Dont know what was wrong with the cable but it has never done it again.

Two things...

Wasn't the cable taped down and how do you get electrocuted with a 'sound cable'? :confused:

Arc between sound cable and exposed fault on back of amp?

Or just a straight static zap?

Probalbly just static and the cable was running under the dj desk so it wasnt taped down. My fault really.

When was this gig?

about 5 weeks ago why do you ask? The amps been tested since and has been given the all clear.

Just because they were tested 5 weeks ago doesn't mean to say they are alright now.......If there is a problem with them or you suspect a problem....best get them checked out....IMO. :)

Beacuse the point of this thread is to post recent (ie this weekend) gigs not one that happened weeks ago.

One of those occasions last night where I didn't think much of the function I was doing but everyone else seemed to love it, more importantly, the guy who booked me.

The function was a 22nd birthday party in a function room at a local school. There were about 60 guests and I was booked for it via my Indie/Alternative night a while back. The request list was great and right up my street. Not everyone at the party was into the Indie/Alternative thing so the music taste was more or less split down the middle with one lot liking it and the other lot requesting RnB and Chart type stuff. I must admit that I found it slightly difficult at times and I would say throughout the night, no matter what the style of music I was playing was, there were no more than 20 people dancing all night. The most important thing is that the majority enjoyed it but to be honest, I don't really like this kind of scenario where there is so much expectation (from the customer and me) as to how the night will go and then on the night itself, it seems almost like a letdown.

I shouldn't moan, I gave out cards to a few people, I had someone come up and ask me if I could do her birthday in January at the same place and I received a round of applause at the end but somehow the night was a bit of a letdown for me. To top it all off, I nearly lost my temper towards the end as on a number of occasions I had told one guy in particular not to lean on my stand when he was speaking to me. Right at the end when I was playing the last song (Undertones - Teenage Kicks), he came over, leant on my stand and my Denon/Mixer flightcase started sliding towards me. A few choice words shouted at him had him scarpering off.

I got a text message about 10 minutes ago from the customer saying "Thanks for last night, loved it and wouldn't have had anyone else"...so in theory that's all that should matter but...I don't know, it almost seems like I was operating on 60% last night. Still, it did the job.
