Good Gig, Bad Gig.

We got there eventually though :)

This one was a combined wedding anniversary and birthday party in the pub function room they used 20 years ago for their wedding reception.
Yup, another hot and stuffy function room with nice big doors leading to the outside world....hey ho.

I'll be honest - I wasn't expecting a great deal from this one due to the heat. It was a minimal setup with an Equinox screen (I've made a little structure to fix it to the DJ table now :) ), and a t-bar with 4 pars and an Intimidator 305. Oh.....and the haze machine :)

Nothing happened pre-buffet, in fact I kept it fairly low key as people were more interested in standing out in the car park with a ciggy. 9:30 comes around and it's buffet time.....take the volume to barely audible at the client's request and bring the lights up to white so they can see what they're doing....it's still stupidly hot in the room but thankfully getting a tad on the nippy side outdoors......I may be in with a chance after all.

I'd been given a rough playlist for the evening to use as a guide, and kept the cheesier moments on hold for use post buffet......I was glad I had.
I threw the full deli-counter at them and they lapped it up in great quantities....at last.

The final 15 mins were to be a selection of slow songs from their wedding day and then finish off with......wait for it.....The Can Can by Bad Manners! (it's been years since I heard that one let alone played it).

Plenty of cards given out and handshakes at the end, plus a potential wedding for next year so must have done something right :)

In an even hotter room tomorrow for a 6yr old birthday party....I bet even THEY will end up going outside :o

Time for a crisp, cold beer now before some well earned sleep

On my phone so not giving a full report but very nice same sex wedding in a venue 5 minutes away for a change.

They really went to town - I was doing wireless moods, gobo and a vocal set in addition to the disco (kerching) and they'd hired in a photo booth and my brother (who DJs too) to take photos and video during the reception.

He's ridiculously busy on the DJing front so this was the first time he's seen me live. On the way home he said - I'm not dicking around, I think my first dance intro is up there with the best of them but yours absolutely blew it away, ive never seen anyone even cone close to touching that.

Rolled up to my res last night to find a van not inconsiderately parked in an unloading position. A chocolate fountain company was to set up in the function room. Ok, it's not like we have much space, but let's try & work something out. So, I got the first load on my rock & roller & into the venue.. and then the DM asked if I knew there was a band coming. WHAT?! No. I didn't know... :lol: (of course I didn't know!). At first I was told the band were to arrive after the choc fountain had left. Yay, disruption! We all love a bit of major disruption don't we?

Anyway, I'd just dragged my gear into the room when the band turned up. We were introduced & they initially seemed like one of those bands. Joy. But they weren't (woohoo). They did ask if they could plug into my PA to save space, but I explained I don't have a PA mixer as such. Ah, but I could plug into THEIR mixer. Yeah good idea I said, but aren't you finishing long before me & scootling off? Ah yes. Anyway they were good. The cake cut & first dance were timetabled for 8.30 & my music changed to build anticipation for that.. and then the photographer asked me to announce that everybody who'd been given a sparkler during the day was to go outside for a group photo. Oh man! They just got the room full & then everybody had to leave?! OK whatever, ms Tog.

Back to background duty & after a few minutes we had a full room once more. I introduced myself, then the cake cut, and then bigged up the band with a namecheck. Got everyone upstanding & cheering for the B&G, then they did the first dance & off the band went on their first set until buffet time. During the buffet set I bumped into a Canadian couple I'd met earlier in the day when they stopped their car to ask me for directions to a local museum. Small world!

After buffet the band did their second set & had a rammed floor pretty much through all of it. Then my turn.

75 minutes of rock & roll, rock & other styles - packed floor throughout. Finished on Medley & Warnes followed by Ole Blue Eyes NYNY (for a change). Asked the bride if she'd had a great day at the end (groom nowhere to be seen) - she said yeah, and asked if I was one of the band. Oh no I'm the DJ I said. And then she gave me a hug. Just another night in a residency then.

Golden wedding anniversary for me in a local golf club for an Indian couple.

Strange playlist including lots of Bollywood and Trap music ( could replace the T with a C, all chosen by the grandchildren).

11 o'clock finish so home and watching The Olympics with a beer before midnight with appreciative clients and happy guests.

Friday night was a trendy little bistro in Hull. Huge thanks go to young Twinspin for assistance above and beyond. He finished rigging a PA job, dashed home, and came out to help me. Access at mine was across a wide pavement to the door, across the bar, through the restaurant, up the spiral staircase, down a corridor, and into the room. How we got the fifteen inch tops, eighteen inch subs, gantry and moving heads up there, I'll never know. :sarc:

Actually, the kit was a tad less than that. Micromax with horns for the W Audio eight inch cabs, two tripars and a Chauvet beamer six.
Room was tiny, and we had thirty five guests. We got rigged up early, and headed along to a WMC where the steward was getting married, to congratulate him. They'd gone to town on the job, and a very dull function room looked splendid. Handshakes all round, nip to the chippy for tea, and back to my gig.
Iris as a first dance, and a nice playlist, augmented by requests from the floor for ripe cheese. We set off at a mile a minute, and the heat soon took its toll. By the end, we were low in numbers. By the time we'd derigged, the place was virtually empty, and we got loaded up and away: back to the WMC, to unload for the DJ there, who's a mate and a great lad. He was pleased and surprised to see us. All in all a very successful night, made possible by teamwork. Thanks again John, you're a star.

Saturday was a family function, a 100th Birthday. I'm related by marriage, so knew a few folk there. Laid back affair, with an understandably early start partly due to lots of young children. They'd engaged a photographer to record the event, and marshalling everyone for the photos took a while. By the time we'd had the toast and the buffet, time was getting on, but with the nature of the event, dancing wasn't high priority. We had a little slot with some Vera Lynn, George Formby and the like for the birthday girl, who had a little trip round the floor for some of these.

Tis the law of Sod that once you're ready for home, and the kids have left, the party animals wake up. Well tough, cos I'm going home. Was given the nod to finish an hour early, all loaded up and home by eleven, what a result. :D:D

Wedding last night in a new venue for me. Whilst it's on the ground floor, there wasn't a route in that didn't involve steps (albeit only 2 at a time), so had to manually lift all the equipment in. I've been getting very used to rolling it all in on my cart recently!

I was booked for this in May of last year, and had been looking forward to it. The bride is Mexican, and she'd said to me at an early stage that Mexicans are up for a party - that always goes down well with me!

Whilst it was a 1am finish, which normally doesn't work, I had a feeling it would on this occasion.

Originally booked to start at 7, a mariachi band had been booked, so my start time was moved til 8. The day over-run, and the mariachi band finished at 9:20, ready for the first dance.

But from then, wow, what an amazing night. Dancefloor packed all evening. I've been given a number of Spanish songs to play too - and the Mexicans were up in force whilst they were playing, but the English guests also gave them a go too which was really nice.

Still had 40 guests on the dancefloor for the last song at 1am which is impressive for that end time!

And what helped make it such a success? The air conditioning. Without the excellent air conditioning in the room, I fear it would have been one of those horribly hot nights, but the room was actually cooler than the outside for once!

Ah if only this was the case more often. Such a reserved, inhibited (I don't know it, so I'm gonna sit down & cross my arms firmly) lot usually I find.

A lady came up to me while I was setting uplast night and asked if I could turn off the air con because it was freezing.

"I'm the dj, I don't actually work here."

Yeah bit I mean its freezing, someone needs to turn it down.

"uh huh, probably best to ask at the bar"

Yeah I suppose bit os there nothing you can do?
