...and I wouldn't have left it to the end of the gig too collect.
I didn't want to feel cheeky.
Just to repeat the :Censored: obvious.
E mail or phone the week before the gig--
Whilst confirming the play list or other matters finsh by saying
AND OF COURSE THE BALANCE IS PAYABLE IN CASH, I ASSUME THATS BEEN AARANGED FOR ME--who will be paying me?
I never have a problem now I use this strategy--normally its handed to me before I start or during the evening.
I agree unless they say on the day--dont worry x has your money I would make a point of asking in a friendly business like way
downmarket venue--WHOS GOT MY CASH then?
upmarket venue--CAN YOU CONFIRM WHO HAS MY FEE IN CASH please?
Its the way you tell em.
CRAZY K
I had a meeting with a couple who are getting married on 6th December at Cave Castle (same place for the meeting) and after a lengthy chat over the music (and other non-disco related issues) I mentioned the balance. They said we can get you a cheque or cash on the night. I mentioned if it were cash it would need to be paid before the disco.
They made a phone call there and then to confirm the best man would have the money, so no problem.
I had a real nice chat with them and it felt like we had known each other for ages. Real polite and open to any suggestions as (in their words) "I know best" :D
Steve it is not cheek to ask for your fee. You deserve it. You seem to be a level headed young bloke with the right attitudes. One reason I expect could be because you were getting grief off the hotel management but dont let that put you off in future. Business is business.
Good Morning Folks,
I hope things are great with you all and you are having some excellent parties.
I had yet another resounding result yesterday (Saturday 22nd November)
See the report here - http://www.bumble-b-roadshow.co.uk/index.php/199
Off now to sort out for today's party.
Last night was an awards evening for one of the local yacht clubs that I've been trying to get into for some time and only managed it because their regular guy managed to double-book himself.
Venue was a posh-ish (for the IoW :o ) hotel, small room with reasonable access. Met up with the VC earlier in the week to measure up, talk through aspirations etc. & did the full PR thing.
Turn up to set up ahead of the gig yesterday to find virtually zero space in which to set up - the room had been set out incorrectly but as the tables were in situ and laid the staff wouldn't alter the layout. Luckily Mr VC arrives early to witness the debacle and notices they haven't laid the dancefloor that he's paid extra for. "Too late to do anything about that mate - the tables are laid and your guests start arriving in an hour. It'll take us that long to set up the floor".
So in the end we agreed to set up the rig and test the lighting etc, then back it into a corner (lovin' them Ultimax wheels!) ready for a quick turnaround once the meal/speeches/award-givings were over. It was impossible to set up PA so we agreed that rather than play background during the meal they'd use the house PA instead and throw on some Enya or something. So we bade farewell and went home until 9pm :)
Arrive back at 9pm fully expecting them to be running late and they've not even STARTED the awards bit :o So we bunk up in the cozy little bar next door - log fire, comfy leather sofas, plentiful beverages... until 10:30 when we hear the 'hip-hip-hoorays' and the mass exodus to the bogs.
By the time the staff had prised enough folks out of their seats to be able to clear enough tables so that we could actually fit behind the deckstand and throw up a couple of speakers, and we'd put out enough announcements to entice a few folks back into the room from the bar next door, it was 10:45.
And the absolute latest cut-off time? Midnight. :p And the number of requests we'd had via the cards that the VC had put out? Only about 200!!!
So we introduced ourselves, apologised there was no way on earth we would be able to play everyone's requests but we'd have a good shot at it in the 75 minutes available, and cracked on with some 70s (which seemed a popular choice) - and then pretty much stayed there all night. Anytime we drifted we got complaints from the pack of women dominating the dancefloor and no matter whose requests/dedications we picked on it didn't manage to pull more than a handful of new folks back into the room.
Then at around 11:30 this really tall bloke appeared in the room and all the women were fawning over him ... turns out he's one of the Olympic gold medal winners showing off his bling; opportunity for a snatch of "We are the champions" which set the place going big time - so the last half hour was back to back "power" songs of the ilk with everyone having a good sing-song, arms in the air etc. and we finished (of course) with 'Bye Bye Baby'. Got to hold the bling, too, and it felt really magical (and heavy!).
I thought overall we'd done a reasonable job under the circumstances - certainly not our best gig by a long stretch - but got a round of applause, hip-hip-hooray'd, plenty of handshakes AND their regatta in May :) :) :) Looks like the other guy's been usurped.
Magic. I love this game.
