Top notch gig on Sunday which I'd been looking forward to for a while.
Kicking off with jazz and swing, moving into acid-jazz/rare groove back into some swing for the first dance and a couple thereafter, then some mellow and groovy house and trance, finishing on more jazz and swing.
Bride and groom were rapt :D

Where do i start.
This was the worst gig i have ever done and i feel so bad about myself.
OK, here we go.
I turned up at 5pm for a 7.30pm start, just to give me extra time to setup. There was some singers who were ment to be there at 5.30pm and they want everything there way. Not a problem.
So i setup on the floor to the side of the stage as i thought they would prefer the stage. When i was setup the lead man started to put all hi mic stands on the floor. He said "that dj is in the way, we need to get to the that door". Anyway.
Some of people started to come. Now this is what annoyed me. The gig was for the army who live local. I was never told this till about 6pm. :bang: I have not nothing to play. All night i was stuck for what to play. And to top it off the denon 2500 made my life a bit more harder. Im used to looking at a laptop screen and looking at the names. But anyway i found the songs i needed, well tryed.
I spoke to the man in charge asking what type of music they prefer as i had no idea, all he said was chart music. So i played chart music. Nothing happened at all.
Then what the singers start it goes well for them. Thats because they have all had a good drink and are in a good mood. So they did a show and the army lot were loving it (well most of them)
To cut it short the singers got a big cheers and wqhen they said lets say thanks to the dj the whole room went silent, and i do mean silent.
I gave it the best i could of with only 1/2 days notice and still they did not like what i did. :(.
Then as we were packing up i slipped on a step, fell on my lower spine and then the 24kg active speaker fell on me. So now i have arch my back and hold my gut in because it hurts to much.
Ohh and the best bit was.......oh wait, there was no best bit.
That was my experaince for this time. :(
Now after this one gig i dont feel like i have what it takes to do the other gigs i have lined up. I feel like i need to start from scratch and learn again. :(

You will always get the odd gig like this, even when you are vastly experienced it happens.
It soundds like to me that you should've maybe tried a few different genres and eras for the music rather than sticking to chart music. It also sounds like that they were there for the band rather than the disco.
You'll get used to the Denon's screen btw!
Don't let one gig get you down - learn from it what you can and move on.

You only had half a day's notice, you asked what music to play, the guy said chart stuff, so that's what you played.
The only thing I would have done differently when I could see that none of the chart stuff was working would be to try some different stuff, and see if I could find something they DID respond to.
I don't know if you did this, but I'd also be asking on the mic for people to come up with requests.
As I said, it's nothing to worry about. Your next gig will probably go well, and you'll soon forget all about it!

I did try a few different genre's. I tryed some funky motown, which worked for a few songs then they lost intrest.
At the end i did get ask if i can play some ****** music so some of the ladies could dance. I played some, they danced and when i played another song the walked off.
We all get them mate, don't dwell on it. You may get a run of disappointing ones, which can really get you down, and make you question your skill and enthusiasm. Then you get a stormer, and are on a high for days after. The response from a satisfied crowd cures many ills. ;) :D :D
I came home from last Friday's gig feeling a little deflated as it hadn't gone as well as I'd hoped for. Not many requests on the night, and not a great deal of dancing till the final hour or so.
Sunday afternoon the client submitted their online feedback form, and the comments were (surprisingly) really good and positive.
It just goes to show how the client and guests perception of the event may differ from our own.
Sometimes we're our own worst critics......
