My wedding on Saturday was a stonker. The bride was slovakian and the groom was a geordie. What a mix of guests. First dance was quite early at 7.30 and the floor filled but then it stayed full right through to midnight. They boogied their socks off. They bought along a couple of slovakian cd's which I played a few tracks from during the night and they were good and kept even the english dancing.
Last night wasn't good or bad... it was plain weird.
Booked from 7:30 - 11:00pm for a smallish wedding - 50-70 guests only - with an early setup due to reasonably early finish.
So we show up at about 6:45 to see the B&G kissing guests goodbye and with about 20 people in the room, mostly kids.
Background up and running by 7:00 but couldn't fire up the lighting to test as the "photographer" was hogging one of the only two power points for his "lab" and was in the middle of spewing out a bunch of pics.
So around 7:30 I unplugged him whilst he'd nipped to the bar :o and got the lighting check completed and we were ready to rock & roll. Except the guest count had dwindled to about 12.
Caught the B&G's attention and they assured me that the evening guests would be arriving soon, and they'd aim for about 8:15-8:30 for the first dance. There would be no buffet so it would be party time through to 11.
So at 8:30 we played the first dances to a room of less than 20 people then starting picking off the quite extensive requests list - mixing old with new as we still had about 50% under-18s - to keep everyone's attention.
At about 9:30 I remarked to my roadie that I'd not seen the B&G for a while (there was a big outside balcony which many guests were using as the room was quite hot) so he goes to find out where they are as I was playing all their favourites and they were nowhere to be seen. Transpires they left right after the first dances :confused: despite having arranged a 3-song big finale with me :bang:
By 10:15 the guest count was down to 6 so I announced that we'd be finishing at 10:30 and took a few last minute requests from the remaining few (and the barman).
The thing is, I can't describe it as a bad gig because despite the low numbers there was always someone dancing and the music was well received! The few left at the end came over and thanked me for playing a great range of music and they'd thoroughly enjoyed it!!!
Hence.... weird!

Mine was a tad annoying, a 21st in a local Social Club, with a lot of guests turning up late, and asking for what I'd played before they arrived. :bang: "Can you play something we can dance to? " "Well what the :Censored: do you think those people are doing? " :bang: You've just spent two hours playing hardcore dance tracks, and similar, you progress onto the cheesy run to the end, and they moan because you won't play what they missed. Grrrrrrr.
30th birthday last night.
No one told me it was fancy dress :eek: .
So I played to 3 batmans ,superman , Tweedledum and Tweedledee ,a whoppee cushion , clowns and a selection of nuns with a vicar plus loads that could not be classified .
All in all about 50 , funny thing was , I was booked till midnight , most were too drunk and left about 11:15 , the staff started to hoover up at 11:40 , I took that as a cue to pack up :D :D .
All in all a good night.

18th Birthday Party - Robins Nest Function Room, Hull KR Ground.
Not a bad night but cut a little short due to bad planning on the Mothers part.
I was booked for 4 hours (8pm-12am) so arrived at 6:30pm so I had plenty of time to set up and soundcheck.
First thing I noticed was that the distance from the stage to the ceiling seemed small. I only just got my deckstand in and had to put the crossbar on the top poles first. Had to re-address my lighting a little as I often have some lights above the crossbar. This resulted in me having my impossibLED pointing at the ceiling (looked ok though).
Anyway, first guests started arriving at around 7:45pm so put some modern tracks on as background music while some guy came up and paid me (nice I didn't have to ask for a change) and by 8pm there were around 50 people (including the miserable birthday girl - hardly smiled all night).
I went and checked with the bar staff what time last orders would be and they said 11:15 and they wanted EVERYONE out by midnight (apart from me obviously). I though fair enough I would stop at around 11:45ish. That would give them 15 minutes to vacate the guests.
Well the disco was 3 1/2 hours of VERY random requests (despite having an 80 strong playlist to contend with) with one very annoying 12 year old who was obviously being sent up by his parents for requests every 15 minutes (I figured this out when he asked for some Johny CaSS - unless he's some new R&B star I haven't heard of yet :p ) The annoying thing was, they were at the table who NEVER danced all night, even to the requested songs :bang: :bang: :bang:
All was going well, plenty dancing (apart from said table) and I had just announced last orders and no more requests when the organiser came up and said in a stern voice "ONE MORE and that's it". I explained to the girls mum who was ok with this but seemed a little upset as the party was still in full swing. I also apologised during my last song announcement that I didn't have time to play some more requests. You know how it is, you leave the best til last. :)
Well, I was packed up by 12 and all the guests were being ushered out like sheep. It felt like 'they had there money now get lost' which I thought was a little harsh.
I was thanked by the birthday girls mum at the end saying it was a great night and they enjoyed the music variety.
So overall I'd say a good gig. Not excellent but good, and home by 12:30
I'm posting on behalf of my friend, who had the worst gig of his life on Saturday. It was a singles night for a regular client.
At about 10.30pm, one of his speakers (active JBL Eons) packed up, and it turned out the cone had popped, so he had to continue with only one speaker.
10 minutes later, the second speaker also popped its cone :eek: :eek: :eek:
He didn't carry any spares, as it's unlikely to lose two speakers opn the same night, so the end result was that the gig had to finish early. The punters got half their entry fee back & my friend gave back half his fee.
I don't know the exact model, but he only got these speakers 7 months ago and paid £800 new. He's discovered they no longer make them, and the upgraded version cost £1,400 a pair!
He can't even get new cones, because he says they are irreplaceable, as they're moulded into the cabs.
I have no idea why both cones popped, as the speakers were not very old, and surely the amp is matched to the speakers so that you can't pop them?
It's lucky this was a singles night and not a wedding.
Out of interest, has anyone else had problems with JBL actives popping their cones?
