50th Wedding anniversary last night, scheduled for backing music from 4pm, start at 7.30pm until 12am. First part went fine, 100 guests, people started leaving by 7pm as they had travelled a long way:eek: .
Left with 50 -60 people, hardly any requests, so just played a mixture, kept people dancing, but most were happy to catch up with relatives and friends they had not seen for years. Anyway, 10pm comes, down to 20 people now, helen,(my mrs), said we would probably finish early, i hoped so, but had a feeling it would go to the death.
Guess what , 12 am we finished:( , the last hour we played to 12 people. however, a couple that were still there, booked me for their wedding next august. Venue owner took my card and said they get too many bang bang disco's there and liked what i did.
Oh and the happy couple were last to leave, in their 70's and bopping away most of the night, the funniest being them dancing to status quo:eek: :eek: , don't let me get old please;) ;) :beer1: :beer1:

It was a great night, I was booked from 6:00pm - 12:00am, with the party starting properly around 9:00pm.
They wanted Cheese, cheese and a little bit more cheese and it was a good laugh. There was also lots of dance and chart music, which went down very well and the dance floor was packed all night. The B&G were only in their early 20's and that is what they had requested.
It was a great night and the B&G even gave me a glass of Champagne! :D :D :D

What a difference a day makes.
Did an eighteenth birthday on Friday and a wedding yesterday, what a contrast.
The birthday party was held in a social club with the set-up on a low stage. The birthday girl requested lasers, strobe and smoke so the plan was to mount a star cluster on the top of the lighting bar with the laser below, the star cluster would light up the ceiling with the laser pointing out over everyone`s heads.
Found out when we got there that the ceiling was average height which,for us, was reduced by the height of the stage meaning that the lighting bar was just short of hitting the ceiling!:eek:
Had to revert to plan B and put them both at either ends of the bar with them pointing roughly at the ceiling. The inclusion of 2 air conditioning units in the ceiling didn`t help also.Somehow it still managed to work,although not as good as we wanted it.
The choice of music was R & B,Dance,D & B and Dubstep.
Having learnt a lesson from our first eighteenth birthday booking some years ago we decided to take plenty of the last 2 along with us.......didn`t need it.The main choices on the night were Lady Gaga,Alesha Dixon,Dizzy Rascal and Tinchy Stryder,anything heavier soon cleared the floor as we found out when given a c d to play. It was a mixture of D & B and Dubstep with the only one "dancing" being the young lad that gave it to us.Tried to play some of our own but it was plain to see that all they really wanted was modern pop and R & B , especially the girls.It was only the boys that wanted the " heavy" stuff and they were in the minority.
So a frustrating night with the last half hour or so being the only time when we had a full dance floor.
The one sour note of the night was at the end of the evening. We did our usual thank you and goobye to the crowd with a response of :Censored: off from some lad who had obviously had one lemonade shandy too many and had not had his request played.
The wedding reception was in the restaurant of a hotel. A narrow but long room with a marquee attached to the side and we were set up at one end of the room in front of a window, which kept us cool all night.
Again the plan was to use the star cluster to light the ceiling, the problem this time was the 3 chandeliers down the middle which meant pointing it off centre and to one side.
The B & G had no specific requests and asked us to play what ever we felt was appropriate.
Apart from a couple of records that left around six or seven people on the floor,while the rest got their breath back, the remainder of the night was played out to a full dance floor with the likes of Summer of 69, Living on a Prayer,Don`t Stop Me Now,Hey Baby and good old Chesney Hawkes proving popular.
The highlights of the evening being a couple that had spent almost the entire evening on the dance floor, doing the quickstep to This Ole House and seeing the B & G leading a long line out of the room, into the marquee and back in again to the strains of Kylie`s Locomotion, a record we rarely play but one that they loved.
First dance was a Beatles number and we finished the night with Hey Jude which had everyone on the floor singing along to.
Unlike the previous evening last night ended with a round of applause.:)
All in all an excellent night.:cool:
First attempt, so this may be a bit all over the place.
Friday Night: Got booked for a wedding in a hotel thats slap bang in the middle of Keswick. B&G wanted the smallest set-up because there was only 30 odd people (including 11 kids). B&G asked if it would be possible to set-up the Thursday night, which i was more than happy to.
Got there on the Thursday and the load in was a breeze...except for the fact that i couldnt set-up becaus ethe hotel had realised that there wasnt going to be many guests and had decided that the ceremony room would also double as their function room! Luckily they had a huge walkk in storage cupboard that i could pretty much set up in and then drag the stand out on the night and finish setting up (hence why im now looking at Ultimax Winch N Wheel). As i was setting up the manager came up and said: "You plug your sound system into this plug". now they diodnt have a sound limiter when i rang so tghat was a surprise. Turns out that the plug isnt the sound limiter, thats the managers job. the plug is there for the fire alarm. If it goes off, i loose the sound system. After explaing that that wount do my sound system any good, we decided i would plug my lights into that. Also pointed out that if is eeen the lights gop off, i could kill the music and use the sound system to usher people out quicker. The manager was over the moon at my suggestion and ()obviously) hadnt had anyone suggest this way or working.
Got there on the Friday for 5.30pm to get in and finish setting up ready for a 6.30pm start (it was early because the B&G asked if i could entertain the kids for a hour or two, which i was happy to do). So in I go, to be told that the Wedding Breakfast (now also in the same room as the Ceremony and Disco) was running very late.
Finally got in there to finish setting up at about 7pm, with all the guests and kid still there looking at me. the Hotel didnt want to move them out of that room because they had another function in the main hote, so they done the turn around around the guests.
Got started at about 7.30pm and got the kids entertained. Musical Bump/Statues/Chairs, with Lucky bags for the winners and Haribo mix for the loosers. Went down really well, even had one or two of the parents up and joining in, with more parents judging. Plenty of mic banter back and forwards which they all loved.
Finally got under way at about 8.30pm with the first dance which was Ronan Keating's Nothing At All. Playlist wise, i was told before hand that the only "older" people there would be the Brides parents (which was true), so i was asked to play a small amount of 70's, some popular 80's, plenty of old school dance from the 90's and then chart stuff. I was told that i could deviate fromn this if i seen the party hedding that way so the playlis was very relaxed.
So, played all the usual stuff from the 80's, Footloose, Dancing On The Ceiling, Lets Hear It For The Boy etc, a bit of 70s disco, and even the likes of baby Love, Build Me Up Buttercup, which all went down great. Then moved into the recent chart stuff, Lady Gaga, Alesha Dixon, Pussycat Dolls etc. Went onto Kings Of Leon and The Killers, which lead into the 80s rock (Guns N Roses, Bryan Adams...you get the picture).
Got to about 10pm and the Brides sister came up and asked if we could start the dancy stuff, whcih was about the right time that the B&G were wanting it changed anyway. First request in that vain was Rui Da Silva's Touch Me In the Morning, followed by the blikes of 2Unlimited, 2 Funky 2, Strike, Livin Joy, Run DMC & Jason Nevins, Asha. Spent the last 2 hours mixing away and they all loved it. the B&G specifically asked if i could mix whilst making the original enquiry so i took it that they wanted the clubby atmosphere for the last leg, which worked a treat.
Overall a good gig, plent of business cards given out and the hotel took a load too.
