I did a booking on 23rd January this year, which was both a good and a bad gig!!! Booked by a good friends daughter for her 30th Birthday, gig was in Ipswich, I live in Hemel Hempstead!! Agreed price and took it as the wife and I were also invited, even if I hadn't of done it.
Loaded up equipment at 1pm left Hemel, arrived at venue 4pm, checked venue out and confirmed music finishing times/last orders with club manager, no problems. Set up equipment, sound checked, changed clothes then chilled until 7.30pm. Party started, buffet eaten, dancefloor packed all evening, At about everyone really enjoying themselves. At about 10.30pm my friends wife came up an said he wasn't feeling too good, so they were going to go home, but their youngest son (19) was staying and would show us how to get to their house, where we were going to stay the night (from a previous visit, I knew that the satnav wouldn't take me directly there, even though I had their postcode, they live right out in the wilds).
Evening carried on, blinding night, finished as instructed at 11.45pm, to cheers and a round of applause and crys of one more tune and carry on. Explained over mic blurb about I'd love to but due to licensing laws and proximity of neighbours we couldn't. Shut down power supplies and proceeded to use the loo then have a quick fag break.
To my horror, I found the son flat out on a bench completely mullered, he'd been in a drinking contest with the girls partner, who had been taken home bladdered. went back inside to find some herbert trying to switch on my gear to play some more tunes, after speaking to him politely (grrrrr) escorted him away from the equipment and I started to break it all down and load it up. Just as I am nearly finished, the daughter, whose party it was, got a phone call from her partners friend saying they were taking him to the hospital as he wasn't breathing properly. Everyone from the family that was still there, immediately left(understandable) even the drunk son was dragged out.
My choice was to either try and find a hotel that we could get a room for the night or drive back the 90 odd miles home, in the end we chose the latter. During the journey home, I got a phone call from the daughter asking if I could tell her mum that her other half was in hospital, as she couldn't get her on her landline or mobile, then rang off saying that she thought her mum was trying to call her. Carried on driving, couldn't find a place to even get a cup of coffee, arrived home at 3.15am. At which the wife instructed me that the dog needed to be taken out for a walk.
Finally got to bed at 4.00am only to be woken at 7.45am by a phone call from my friends wife asking "WHERE WERE WE", she, embarassingly knew nothing about what had happenned, I explained that she had to contact her daughter straight away to find out how everyone was. In the end the daughters partner had his stomach pumped then discharged himself from hospital, my mates son got his a**e kicked severely for the week, but luckily everyone was ok.
The crazy thing was that the venue asked me whether I would do somemore bookings for them, as everyone in the other bar had enjoyed the music as well, I've left it open for them to ring me. ;)
Hi people
What a great gig i had last night ( Saturday )
It was a gymnastics club presentatation evening for children and adults
There was about 120 in a hall that was not that big.
After i had gone and purchased 4 small boxes of chocolates for a couple of games that they wanted, the organizer decided not to have the games because there were so many people dancing and she did not want to stop them. some of the young gymnasts were doing back flips while they were dancing. I aslo had to do the auction that they had and i had people laughing with a few quips, one of the lots was a signed Arsenal shirt and i thought ok i will have a bid on this, but it went for £165. so i gave up. They said that they want me to do the BBQ that thet have in the summer. so all in all it was a great night. :)
Well, my gig on Friday was particularly short in terms of actually playing music. I started at 11:55pm and finished at 12:30am! I was playing alongside a soul and Motown tribute singer and was basically compering the evening, which I love to do. Getting out with the radio mic and talking and joking with the audience is something that doesn't happen too often these days, but I love to do it.
Anyway, stupidly and I must admit, I have done this before - we arrived at the venue to find that I hadn't loaded the truss in the van. I could have popped back to get it as it was only about 30 minutes drive, but it was Friday evening and there was a lot of traffic about. So, using clamps and various safety cables etc, I put the 2 x EFX500 on top of the winch pods and 2 x led pars at the bottom. I could have just put the EFX's on the floor as they have a floor stand sort of built in to them. It worked really well and looked OK. I have a picture and will upload later.
About half way through the evening in between the singer's sets, I had a lady come and ask me for a card and I hadn't even done anything apart from the compering! Funnily enough, she said she really liked the look of the disco and the fact that there wasn't masses of coloured lights, so perhaps it was fate forgetting the truss!
In all I played for 35 minutes and gave out 2 business cards to interested parties. The floor was rammed for those 35 minutes and the singer was very good too, so all in all, a very good evening. (especially as we packed away in less than 25 minutes!)
Not too bad.
dual 21st birthday at the local club , the thing with social clubs is , there is always a few who moan because they cannot play darts etc:( .
loads dancing ,I had a rough playlist , all modern and chart stuff , what did they end up dancing to.............Disco inferno . celebration , dancing on the ceiling :D , works every time.
The only bad bit was a couple kicked off at 12:30 , glass everywhere , I have just finished picking bits of glass from the mixer :bang: ( the venue is alarmed ,so I leave the gear till the morning) .
I had a power supply that went down on the KAM radio mic , and a seized stepper motor on a purelight laser , as luck would have it , I have another purelight laser that the laser has failed , I`ll take the stepper motor from that unit .
Cheers
Daryll
Tonight was a very good gig...It was a new regular Monday quiz night.
To be honest, I dread the first week of a new quiz night, because sometimes only a couple of teams turn up, and sometimes none at all. However, I had 7 teams, which is excellent for the first week...especially when the quiz has not been advertised, apart from a few small flyers on the bar.
The boss was really nice & supplied me with a couple of drinks, and the atmosphere was excellent, so I'm a happy bunny at the moment. I'll be amazed if this quiz doesn't take off.
There was also a team of swedish people (3 girls & one guy) who I gave extra points to, partly because of their obvious disadvantage due to their nationality & partly because one of them in particular was very nice!!!
The only problem with working on Mondays again is that when I have a weekend with a disco on the Friday AND the Saturday, it means I'll end up working 13 nights in a row.
Had quite a good gig on Friday night. It was a 70's charity night at quite an exclusive inn in Northumberland. Was good to see everyone dressed up for the occasion.
Due to my distinct lac of 70's lighting Steve Hanley came along to assist (cheers Steve :beer1: ) compete with light screens which really set off the appearance of the show - cheers Steve (sure he will be along to comment :D :D ). Carrying all this kit reminded me why a van is so handy :)
One concern I had was there was NO SEATS in the room - none whatsoever  . About 80 people turned up and it was apparant from the beginning that they were out for a good time. Had the floor full most of the night, incorporated a couple of happy birthdays.
The biggest bonus was that originally I was booked, and charged, till 1230. However the organiser changed this to 1130 as she did not want to drag the night out too long. 1130 came, last song played and a lady came up to ask how much to pay for an extra hour. Quick whip round and away we go for an extra hour.
I was lucky to also have 'country life magazine' in attendance with a full report and picture due to be published.
Song of the night - has to be a toss up between YMCA and the Hokey Cokey :o
Yes Friday night was an awesome gig and I have to say Chris it was a real pleasure to work with you' We'll definateley have to do it again sometime
It was good where we both bounced ideas off each other on how to keep the dance floor full all evening despite there been nowhere for anyone to sit apart from the poshest cocktail lounge I think I've ever seen not too many of them in Gateshead
