Well seeing as everyone else has joined in........
IMO most new chart stuff is pants apart from the odd gem now and again, I keep up with the charts but it is a pain lol!!!
Would rather play the stuff that I know works mingled in with requests really...
If the dancefloor empties next song is my choice to get people back on the dancefloor!!!!
Next point you can't educate people at a wedding or a 21st etc; they are there to be entertained and that's it!!
And if the market was large enough I would specialise in goth, industrial, ebm and indie from the late 80's to late nineties but :( that isn't the case.
So I respond to what people want to hear, on every intial meet up i'm always asked if I have any chart stuff ?!
Conclusion even though i'm middle aged (NOT OLD) I still keep up to date. :beer1: :)
I'll admit that I haven't read this thread however I prefer music like most people from my teens and early 20's. I will say however that I dont think modern stuff is nearly as bad as everyone else makes it out to be. If people are dancing and having a good time then I'm happy even if it means playing songs that I detest and I'll happily admit apart from dubstep there isnt anything I hate with a passion.
I tend to agree with you Neil, I think that the Charts at the moment are actually as good as they have been for years, there's some cracking music about at the moment, granted there is some rubbish as well, but hasn't that always been the case?

See thats another thing. I dont get the whole anti Justin Bieber thing either? Without taking this too far off topic but his songs arent that amazing but with the right crowd and you drop in "baby" they are loving it.

Saturday I had the younger crowd (all 6 of them) up dancing to the likes of Jason Derulo, Neyo, Black Eyed Peas etc etc and the requests kept coming.
All current stuff and all artists that have or are infesting the charts.
Also on saturday, the slightly older crowd (house wives etc..) were all up dancing to the likes of Paolo Nutini, Ellie Goulding, Michael Buble and Eliza Doolittle.

The latter list above still doesn't float my boat that much but I prefer it to the others I have mentioned. It shows that those people 'over a certain age' don't just like the classics and anything from the 60s, 70s and 80s so it is good to keep up to date with everything.
It's funny because a couple of years ago I did a 50th birthday for a lady (:Censored::Censored::Censored::Censored: most definitely!). A lot of the guests were requesting the usual 60s, 70s, 80s classics etc and she came up to me half way through the night and said in the nicest possible way "I know I'm 50 but I do like some of the banging stuff. Have you got any trance?". I played a blinding 25 minute set after that with the volume turned up a notch and you should have seen her and some of her guests going for it...seeing them all go mad to System F - Out of the Blue (one of my favourites) was great!
Guys - I play clubs and do my mobile business - I have to agreee with steve - the mobile disco audience is up for party music -I have had on many occasions had punters asked me to play just house / rnb and as we all know- beggining of night goes well then it falls flat on its face.
I keep to the following rules
never leave any records at home - you never know !!
