So when does a DJ need to retire or you really need to stay abreast of modern music??

Have met this situation many times over the years guys sorry DJ's whom are thinking that they are a lot younger than they actually are. These so called DJs seem to think that their audiences need educating inmusical taste.

What they fail to realise is that for mobile DJs it is the audience whom dictate what music should be played & not the DJ (Whom after all is there to entertain his / her audience).

Do these DJs think that by playing tracks that none of their audience have heard of makes them hip & cool? Whan in reality their audience is laughing at the old fart trying to be trendy.

IF PEOPLE WANT UPFRONT MUSIC THEY'LL GO TO A CLUB. MOBILE DJS SHOULD PLAY NOTHING BUT THE CLASSICS????

Do you employ a guy whom needs educating or are you on now one of these DJ's WHOM REFUSE TO ACCEPT THE CLASSICS even though you run a mobile disco business??????????

I have to say I agree with what you are saying. But at the same time, it does pay to keep your eye (ear) on the ball to know what new tunes are popular and not get stuck in the past. After all at most functions you are playing to a wide range of ages and therefore still need to keep yourself reasonably up to date. For example. I was at a 40th birthday party recently and the DJ played a few tracks I had never heard before (some of which I thought were crap by the way). Nvertheless they seemed to go down well with some of the teenagers there.

Surely that is the mark of a good DJ? Knowing what your audience wants? If they want new stuff, you've already spoken to them prior to the gig, there's plenty of time to read a few music mags, check a few websites, and learn a thing or two. All good party DJs should know the tracks which make a party swing, for any audience, any time...no?

Have to agree with that sentiment. I dj'd in Bournemouth clubs years ago and I dictated the type of music played. If you don't like it then don't come into my club! Simple.

However as a mobile dj you have to play a much broader spectrum and the people on the dance floor dictate to me now.

Everybody can keep up with modern music.

The trick is to pick the bits that will go down well in your shows. Most of mine only have a short set or so of clubby music, just for the few who want it, then back to main style of night.

We are expected to be able to cater to all ages - so knowing both your old and modern stuff. Anyone who considers just the classics will be specialising and narrowing down their audience.

If your employing someone in your business agree completely--you have a good reputation to keep up.

Personally as an older generation Entertainer presenting the odd Mobile Disco session with Barn Dance my view has never changed for my clients.

I play what they want--I dont presume to know what they want--so I ask them.

Obviously there are plenty of usual suspects but I never make assumptions.

Whether thats the way modern DJs work I dont know--but I do know it works very successfully for the clients I work with--I only take on gigs that allow me to offer this service--Weddings and Private Parties.

All other styles Xmas Party, Football Club Disco etc I pass on if I can to
people on here assuming im happy with their attitude to the client.

I am one of the oldies and have been doing this job longer than most. When will I give it up? My usual answer is when it give me up. Last night I did a high school prom. I actually tried to find a youngster to come with me but couldnt; so Jan and I did it on our own. I have never been a particularly up-front sort of dj even when I was doing clubs. I tend to play pop and commercial dance. I certainly dont try too hard to educate mobile audiences. Inevitably I had to play a lot of r'n'b, house and garage last night. I do keep up to date with modern stuff. I was mostly driven by requests. The organizers asked me to play some cheesey party oldies later on in the evening and it was a good night so much so that they have booked me again for next year. Last year they apparently had a 19 year old dj who played what he wanted all night and nobody danced. I am three times his age and charged them twice as much. When should I retire? You tell me.

Good on you Theo, I think thats exactly what I was getting at in my post. You've gained yourself an extra gig by not being afraid to try genre's or era's of music your not entirely comfortable with. And you can have a bit of an ego massage knowing that, as a self confessed oldie, you can still get "down" with the younger crowds.

I always say I play 'mainstream' popular music - i.e. accepted, established, recognized.

I admit I struggle on a lot of the more modern stuff, but then i get around that by taking Mrs Creature :):) gets around the problem nicely 99% of the time. But I am slowely picking up on the more modern stuff after all there is some good stuff there.

We done a 50th Wedding anni last night - they wanted a right mix from 30s/40s waltzs foxtrots etc, to cheese, party, 60s'70s'80s pop and some chart stuff. And when we finished of with "the last waltz & The Ovalteenies Wish me luck" gota standing ovation. And we got a healthy tip ontop of the fee. as well as picked up a couple more bookings. (this from a booking I would normally steer clear off,

I feel I should point out that I did tell Badger that I was going to post this thread & offered to take it down if he wasn't happy with it.

After reading the subject matter at hand I take no offence as every DJ is diferent, some are stuck in a time warp and play the same set virtually at every mobile disco. But some really keep astride of possible new modern classics to be ie promos.

It also depends wether the client wants to hear, well known mainstream classics or certain genres of style through the night (not many ask for goth and R'n'B for instance), but most want cheesy party sounds or in total reverse No cheese?? But we are there to please the client 90% to 95% of the time, a perfect 100% is a always wanted pinicle of DJing.

In my eyes a DJ that does the same thing week in week out without wavering musically should be thinking of retiring or at least have a kick up the butt as audiences change weekly.

I know one guy whom does a local pub basically does the same set week in week out and strangely enough the pub is full of winging customers whom never get there requests???

But another disco I know selects different DJ's upon there ability and musical knowledge to certain customers needs?? You would not send a DJ whom is more suited to do a 70's / 80's old school party and reggae styled night to do an R 'n' B Hard house and current night. As they would be out of there depth

I believe that a DJ is there to educate wether the music is new or old popular or lesser known, We are teachers and there to make someones night memerable if not unforgetable for the right reasons... This is a hard enough task most of the time for most DJ';s as you cant force customers to dance

And that is the exact reason you can play the same tunes each week, 'cos punters change. How many people do you think would be at a wedding at the same venue, the next week? People in a party enviremont, want to hear tunes that they know and if they know the songs they are more likely to dance.

Perhaps in a club this would be different as people go to a club specifically to dance.

So the pub is full then?

Pubs are different and you can get away with playing all sorts of different tunes, old and new. The last time I had a weekly pub, I'd have an hours worth of new tunes every week and the punters enjoyed it, however this is a different scenario to DJing at a one off wedding or birthday, where people want to hear familiar music or their requests.

We are there to entertain people, not educate them.

"Educating punters" is for DJs in trainspotter genre-specific clubs.

I've never ever believed that a DJ is employed to just play everything and anything that is requested, popular, or remembered. Quality control should come into the equation at some point and that is generally to do with the education of the clientele by the DJ. It doesn't automatically mean an empty dancefloor, nor does it have to be done in such a way that it's overly noticeable. It certainly shouldn't stop DJs from being adventurous from time to time, or stop audiences from having just as good a night as they might otherwise have had, IMO.

I'm possibly one of those guys who should retire, according to some on this forum, because I'm not likely to change my ways just to accommodate punters...however, maybe my working methods are already far more stimulating to punters than the average DJ and allow me to play a far more danceable selection of tracks anyway. Who knows?

You are basing this on clubs though and that is a completely different animal. Mobile discos and working in a bar/club is a completely different thing and takes a different approach.

Mobile DJs are not educators of music. Club and bar DJs are and have always been.

There are too many people getting confused between the 2 businesses and types of DJs.

I wouldn't say bar DJs are necessarily either. A hell of a lot of bars do nothing but retro nights

IF mobile DJs are lampooned by the likes of certain comedians (and the general public's perception of us is similar?) it's entirely due to the fact that they tend to play too safe and are therefore a sitting target to be stereotyped. I believe there is plenty of room for manoeuvre to stay away from that stereotype and the ability to do so is somewhat linked to a person's DJing ability, in its purest sense. Even when I was a club DJ I never played safe and you know what? It never did me any harm. It may prove a less popular, less lucrative and less punter friendly approach (however, there are plenty of star DJs who have this attitude), but it ain't necessarily wrong and if every DJ had the attitude, mobile DJs might actually have a better press and a lot more respect shown them.

sometimes a mobile dj function is just like a club/pub, or can turn into one after all the wrinklies have gone!

I did a graduation ball last night, and a 21st saturday night, neither party had anyone over 30 y/o and both were 1am finishes, and I was very pleased i stay abreast of the current musical trends, a previous thread talked about versatility, I think this is another string to as dj's bow, and you never know when you might need it!!.

If i didn't have the experience of working in a pub every sunday night, I would have looked foolish at both of these functions.

I doubt it. Certain things are worth pursuing. Business at any price isn't one of them, so far as I'm concerned.

I'm all for DJs getting better and being more professional in their outlook, but as an old-timer (with about 4 years mobile experience in total, BTW) I see many businesses that have a bright, fresh, confident, (supposed) customer focused ethos, that are absolute pants to deal with, 'cos everything they do is sooo regimented and sickeningly unoffensive. i.e. they have no soul, no humanity. Give me real people, who show real emotions any day.

What a load of old codswallop. Most entertainers do the same act every night: singers, bands, magicians, comedians, jugglers etc etc. They do change their act but only slowly - the band learn a new popular song, the comedian gets a new topical joke, the conjuror learns a new trick, the jugglers get new costumes etc. Many mobile dj's are like that and there is nothing wrong with that at all. Badger the reason why you whinge on here so often about lack of gigs and low fees is because you are so totally wrong focussed. You are so concerned about preaching to the world about the latest hip music that you lose the plot which is that a mobile dj is an entertainer and always has and will be. You are so completely wrong when you say that the raison d'etre for dj's is to educate. It isnt and it never ever has been. Discotheques were invented because of a lack of musicians during the war. They thrived because when the bands came back they were cheaper (thats why the Musicians Union campaigned so vigourously against them for 40 years) and also with the advent of soul, reggae and rock lots of the dance bands were simply not capable of playing that sort of music. If you want to teach thats fine but dont then come on here and whinge that you are getting the same fees you were back in the 80's.
As for you Steve you have an elitist attitude about music. Thats fine but it may limit your market. I try to vary some of the music I play for my own satisfaction and am pleased when I experiment with new tunes that work well but I am request driven even to the extent that if the audience wants Jive Bunny and the Tweets then I'll play it for them. There are several santimonious dj's on this forum that wont do that. It doesnt have to be cool and hip to be popular and successful.

Since I'm operating the same policy as Theo of giving the customers what they want, I shall continue to do so. :D Logically, that should mean I appeal to the greatest number of customers. I may not be cutting edge, or intellectually challenging, but I'll settle for bums on seats ( in a manner of speaking. ;) :D )

I think there's some point missing going on...Every DJ will have a "standard" set of songs they turn to on a regular occasion there's nothing particularly dinosaur about it, its the law of averages, the most popular party songs are going to please most people most of the time.

Your audience determines how much you need to keep up with the times. If your dealing predominantly with 30+ age group, there is going to be little demand for bang up to date music, however, if you want to be genuinely adaptable, its good to be on top of thing with current scenes. If you get a younger crowd, or requests for new stuff, it makes sense to know what works, what doesnt or have some idea of what could work. 18th's are notorious for brand new music. Theo showed a few posts back that he's got enough new material to satisfy that crowd...thats adaptability. If you refuse to keep up, you risk getting less return business from younger/trendier crowd, simple as.

I realise all you're saying. However, with 1000s of great toons to play, I'd pass by on the Tweets and Jive Bunny every time. My quality control forbids me to even consider them (nope, I don't even have them in my fairly extensive library). I really don't see what the problem is with occasionally saying NO to a customer, even in this day and age (since when could anyone take umbridge with a polite apology). I certainly don't view it as being sanctimonious or elitist, it's just that I'm willing to draw a line.

For some reason I don't get that many requests at gigs. I take this to mean that I must be doing a reasonable job of satisfying people's needs. Of course, I could be completely wrong. I might look menacing, shabby, ultra cool, or not worth chatting up and don't realise it.:p :rolleyes:

I realise all you're saying. However, with 1000s of great toons to play, I'd pass by on the Tweets and Jive Bunny every time. My quality control forbids me to even consider them (nope, I don't even have them in my fairly extensive library). I really don't see what the problem is with occasionally saying NO to a customer, even in this day and age (since when could anyone take umbridge with a polite apology). I certainly don't view it as being sanctimonious or elitist, it's just that I'm willing to draw a line.

For some reason I don't get that many requests at gigs. I take this to mean that I must be doing a reasonable job of satisfying people's needs. Of course, I could be completely wrong. I might look menacing, shabby, ultra cool, or not worth chatting up and don't realise it.:p :rolleyes:

That is your choice but it is not the correct one in my view. I was taught that the customer is king even if he has little or no taste. I dont have to like what I play - its a profession - not a hobby.

Just to verify things

Theo whom says I am not currently busy now???? I do DJ work as well as Mobile Disco work as well as karaoke work?? and to top it off I also do Club and Pub work as well as private functions....

As an old adage says if the cap fits wear it. I can wear many caps!!! After 20 years as a DJ I have become very Diversive and Versitile

When doing private work. I do as the customer asks or requests as and when they ask or request. But inbetween times I will ad my own personality or regular party set I may play??? may that be old school or current new tracks if I can make them work then Im doing the right thing for my customers.

When doing DJ work wether for someone else I check to see how the land lies musically

Covering a mobile where Im just DJing I ask the person whom passed me the booking or work what the customer requested.. but usually the tweets will work if requested people are fickle animals LOL

In a pub music is generally rotated and depends on the night style required by the publican the tweets could work

In a club it depends on the night styles which can vary greatly the tweets generally will not work

I thought I recalled several threads by you on this forum moaning about bookings and fees being in decline - maybe I'm mistaken. If you are busy and doing well then I am happy for you.
Dont get carried away about The Tweets. I seldom play it (thank goodness) but at every gig I will try to include my current favourite tune whatever that happens to be at the time. Of course I realise that the music you play in pubs is different to what you play in clubs and again at mobiles. I have worked at the top in all three areas during the last 5 decades.
