Boycott mobile discos that use laptops!
Y'all gonna love this one, chaps! An MSN Tech & Gadgets discussion; posted in here as it's more than just a tech discussion, has relevance to how the mobile DJ is perceived, thanks to 60 quid Sid and his laptop...

Nice to see the general public's view -- e.g.

"... Do people still use mobile disco.....you can`t be serious.
There is nothing like a real band playing.
If you want to listen to recorded music go to a club that plays it.
If i ever booked a disco and they turned up with a laptop and not the real thing. i.e. turntables and discs lights and a mic....they would not be paid.
As they are properly downloading illegal music to use and then earn money from..."
plus some advice on what to demand when booking your mobile disco:

"...The golden rules...
1) If you're going to book a DJ get them to demo in front of you first.
2) Agree what kit they are going to use and make them demo to you with that kit
3) Don't pay them up front!!! Pay a deposit to retain them and the rest on completion of the gig.
4) Ask for references..."

Regardless of whatever this particular person thinks - I do think DJs using laptops are not highly regarded by the general public.

I dont think mobile dj's in general are highly regarded by the public, unfortunately. Its just the publics ignorance.

Thats why a Cortex, or Denon HD or similar is always a good idea as it looks like a normal head unit. Public perception and all.

But so very important in ensuring a healthy supply of follow on work.
I intend to invest next year in a cortex and two lap tops (one for lighting and one for music).
I will however be flight casing the crotex with my denon CD player and mixer. I will still also continue to take a couple of flight cases of my core CD's that we use on a night to look like we have some 'physical' music with us.
Its a perception thing as they will be able to see some CD's so won't put two and two together that everything we have isn't in those two boxes of CD's (Although techincally a normal night could fit as its only 6 hours of music - just which six is the tough bit)

However the 2 quoted posts are advocating non-payment if a laptop is used... and one wants us to set up our whole playout rig before a booking can be taken!
Imagine... the faces of the B & G when the Best Man / Bride's Father tells them that there will be no music at their evening reception...
"...Bloomin' DJ was gonna play offa laptop - so we sent him packing!..."
"... Wot we gonna do for music now then? ..."
"... I'll get me iPod and plug it into the venue sound system..."

I get paid before I play not after.
I don't set my rig up to show it to someone - I have photo's
If they don't like that approach and demand that kind of nonesense they can go forth and multiply having first conversed closely with my unshaven posterior.
We are a good outfit I won't be treated like doo doo's on ones shoe shoes!
I thank you
