organising my hard disk...help!

I have been putting this off for ages but I have to organise my hard disk as all my tunes are not cauterised and are all over the place ....Where do I start??? genres like rock,country,party and disco are easy to do,but do you put sub directory's to the genre ie year or do you tag the year in the title?
