My bank has a secure online messaging facility for which I have a login and password.

Whenever they wish to communicate with me electronically, they send an email asking me to log into the secure messaging facility.

No further details than that; No links, no dramas.

I get tons, at least half a dozen a week if not more, all along the same lines. Natwest, Loyds, HSBC and Halifax mostly, I don't bank with any of them! Funny thing is its only to my hotmail address which I only use for Facebook and entering competitions. (I get virtually no junk throught to my 'real' address)

I find that the e-mail address does say [at]hsbc.co.uk, HOWEVER I know it isnt. It is possible to send an e-mail from any address. The best approach to take is to delete or mark as junk/phising. Banks dont use e-mail to communicate anyway.

    Mine does.

But they never send out links or personal information.

The one in the OP didn't, as I got it too.

It didn't have HSBC ANYWHERE in the email address!

Well if it is, I've not received one yet.

They either don't have the bank name in the email address at all, or if they do, it's at or near the end of the address, whereas if it was genuine it would be at the beginning.

I just junk anything that even remotely looks like it's from a bank or financial institution. If my bank want's to contact me they have my tel numbers.

    Default BT Scam email

I was given an email by a scammer on a media / dating site [email protected] i was sure that it was BTs actual email address. The scammer said it was a google hangout address.. I rang BT and they said they used to use that address but not anymore. I said it was a scammer using their email address to look more official. BT said they would pass it on to their investigation team
