What would you say were the best songs from this period.
Songs that you would normally class as good enough to play at a function.

interesting- I would play 1 or 2 of those songs.
I tend to find that there is not too much stuff around from the last couple of years that I think we will be playing in 5-10 years.

Maybe Scissor Sisters, Kaiser Chiefs, Girls Aloud, but not a lot else....

Well, it does depend on the gig, of course, but I think 'Suddenly I See' will definitely be around for a while, I was thinking of all gigs that I might do, be they weddings or 18th birthdays or, as is the case for the next few months, school balls.

By the way, the question wasn't what would be around in 10 years!

Oh, and I forgot Kaiser Chiefs 'Ruby'.

When you think about it, we think there are tonnes of "old songs" to choose from but if you look at the various charts on on the internet there are lots of songs that were "Number one" in someone's estimation that simply aren't known these days. I can probably, with a bit of work, come up with a top 100 for most years from the early-60s onwards... that doesn't alter the fact that thousands of singles were released in any given year, just like now.

The original question was because i struggle to come up with tunes that are that good really. Yes some good dance tunes but i cant think of any really good run of the mill.
Scissor sisters- dont feel like dancing,
    Gnarls Barkley,
things like this as opposed to indie, dance,R&B

BUT this Thom, Sandi - I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair)
    I really hate that tune.

Seconded, absolutely awful track. Don't see the appeal.

I do struggle with the average disco when they ask for modern music though, because other than dance, hip hop,r and b , indie, there is not much else

Well Shakira is missed off that list.. thats got to be one of the most playable RnB type songs of recent times.

I also agree with Bob Sinclar - Rock this Party, Scissor Sisters (obviously!), and would add Fedde Le Grand - Put your hands up for detroit.

I think "something kind ooh" is more playable that "biology" by Girls Aloud.

Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger is another good one.

I think the current single by Maroon 5 is brilliant and a real crossover song which appeals to all ages and tastes and will there be played for quite some time.

I totally agree! I'm a big fan of Maroon 5, anyway... 'This Love' is still a regular play hereabouts.

There really isn't anyone doing the blue-eyed soul thing at the moment, even Mick Hucknall's gone a bit modern R'n'B of late.
