going through a bizarre spell at the moment!

tonights was a change of venue at about a weeks notice, a 21st birthday, so no real problem, venue was only a couple of miles difference - about 45mins from home.

firstly, the venue took some finding as it was hidden away up a narrow country lane that looked like someone driveway.

then when we went to set up, no one knew we were coming or what was going on tonight - so good start!

the chairman of the club then came over whilst we were setting up and said, 'i know theres a do on in here tonight, but we normally do bingo in this room (there was a members room and a function room) on a saturday, so i'll probably come in about 9 oclock and call it...' i just looked at him bemused... - he was serious. he was then inviting the general public from the other room come and sit in the function room - which had been booked for a private function!

then he came over about 10 minutes later to say tonights act had arrived and could we move over so he could get on stage....i didnt know there was another act on.....so we re jigged everything and moved over and the guy, a singer, sets up his gear. I asked him what music he sang and he said Motown, and how did he know the lad whos 21st it was? 'errr i dunno, i just turn up and sing'. I thought this was weird for a 21st, so I went and asked someone at the bar, who then does a bit of delving to find hes the club singer for the members room not for tonights function AND he'd been cancelled and his agent hadnt told him!!.

so he was packing away as all the guests were arriving...


the do was very slow for a 21st - but really got going near the end (when the ale kicked in!) so i left happy enough after all that.


15 mins into the ride home with my sights set on an early night driving down the country lanes of cheshire i got pulled over off the police for a random producer check and had to sit in the back of the police car for 30 minutes whilst he checked out all my details, as i didnt have my licence on me.

anywho, to be fair he was a friendly guy - had a chat about DJing (as he asked what i was doing around that neck of the woods) and I just got a 'documents producer', but i could have been home and infront of the telly by the time i got out of his car!.

but what a way to end a mad night!!

That does sound bizarre. Real chaos. Did the bloke come in and do the bingo? If I had booked a function somewhere I would expect it to be private - unless of course it was being done on the cheap.

My wedding last night at my regular hotel. I had to do it on my own as Jan has the lurgi. They were ready when I arrived at 6.30; so I could get in almost straight away. Set and changed by 7.30, first dance 7.45 (bride wanted it much later but father wanted his money's worth!) Lady In Red (yuk). They all danced well. Very early on I was getting requests for Cha Cha Slide, YMCA, Macarena and even Black Lace "Superman". Buffet wasnt scheduled until 9.30 and I thought I cant hold off for that long; so I did lots of the cheesy party stuff much earlier than I would normally expect. The bride was lovely but many members of the audience looked a bit rough and ready. Loads of tattoos, earings, casual clothes - down market and chavvy. But to be fair they all behaved themselves and danced well. The bridegroom was a very short young bloke with a very rugged face. He asked me to play "My Humps" and then proceeded to do a solo dance routine in the middle of the floor to everyone's delight. From then on it was r'nb, trance, hip hop etc . Finale of the evening was a request from the bride for a dance off - girls vs boys; so had all the girls on one side of the floor and all blokes on the other and played Run DMC "Its like that". Groom won! Then got a circle put b & g in middle for last dance "Time Of My Life" and he only did the full routine! It hadnt been rehearsed or requested. Very good night.

Last night's gig was an entire running order chosen by the bride.Some worked and some didn't buit didn't really feel a part of it as it was almost "Computerised"
The bride's Father came up at one point and asked for a couple of songs off his cd to be played. 5 mins later he came up and shrugged his shoulders to ask "what the problem was" I explained that I was waiting for his daughter to come back in the room.He then said that my only real problem is to play the music and be done with it". I was simply doing the courtesty of thinking he'd want his daughter present.If that was not the case he didn't need to be rude
I DID play the songs but was very tempted not to.

I guess the easy thing is to start an argument with the guy but obviously you don't want to create a scene for the B+G.Having said that she was quite frosty at the end and I can only assume he bad mouthed me anyway.

My wife suggested it shoul be like the NHS and we should have a sign that says no abuse! Sometimes dealing with the public makes you feel lower down the pecking order than a fly.
It seems that the B+G parents feel that they have a right sometimes to antyhing they want when THEY want it because of who they are .
Does hiring you for the night really give them the right to treat people that way? Also,would anyone else NOT have played his tracks?
