Anyone else have a gig report from the weekend?

Right folks, time to step back and calm down a little. As a new mod I'm fairly eager to start pressing these shiny buttons i've recently found, and once I've started with them, I can get very trigger happy!


Just so nobody is in any doubt, I'm a stickler for politeness on here, and I consider it of paramount importance. Consider this a heads up one and all.

Gary, I think Charlie had a valid point, a fair question, and phrased it very politely for him. I for one would cheerfully nick an idea that worked from one as young as Charlie, or as old as Theo and Tony Tiger in a flash. I'm not proud. Blimey, I'm even considering minimal lighting,a la Solitaire, so nothing's ruled out!!

You mentioned a beer. How long would it take you to get to Reading, and buy Darren one?

I enjoyed a great gig last night, Rockliffe hall in Darlington, it was a meal and a disco in the golf clubhouse, open for anyone, so i had 3 birthdays, a wedding and a n anniversary party all in the same room.

I tried to make it as personal as possible asking for and playing requests for each table, which included a romantic dance for the couple celebrating their anniversary (claire - gilbert o'sulivan) and a 1st dance the newlyweds - (Memories are made of this - Dean Martin) ... as the various groups left people went out of their way to thank , hug and shake my hand.

I went home buzzing !! especially as the owner of the hotel (Steve Gibson) was there too.

Peter, what was written by myself obviously looked a lot worse on screen than it did in my mind when I was writing it. Charlie's point was a valid one I agree but in total honesty....I imagine (and took it for granted) that it's common sense that when you are going to play a track like the HC (look, I can't even say it anymore!), you tell people to get into a circle etc and be ready so in that way, Charlie was telling me something I already knew. Yes, I could've worded my reply better, hands up.

I don't think I've done a gig report in here before. So here goes....


Well, this weekend has been about highs and lows for me.

Friday: Absolutely stormer of a gig in the famous Old Course Hotel in St Andrews. It was an End Of Year Ball for the party animals at St Andrews University.

Sauturday: I was looking forward to this one as it was the family of the guy that started me off DJ'ing all those years ago. It was his sisters wedding and the turnout was very poor, and half of them kids. It was one of those nights where nothing really moulded into place. Big hall, small crowd and very difficult to build up an exciting party atmoshere. Funnily enough the B&G couldn't thank me enough for a "fantastic night"....despite me thinking it was a little bit flat.

I had a good one last night, I won't go into details as I don't like blowing my own trumpet.

All I'll say is, to the DJ that should've been playing Ponsbourne Park last night, who didn't want to talk to the B&G until the night & had no PAT & PLI.......

On a roll at the moment myself too, last 5 gigs have been superb so half expecting a really awful one soon.

My weekend was a good one - Looooong, challenging but rewarding.

I did a wedding (6pm-12pm) at a local hotel for around 60-70 guests.

70% of the guests were African, within 15 mins of starting I had a CD thrust upon me with some "dancehall" on it. I'm fully digital so I tried explaining several times I couldnt play his requests via the CD and I really needed a USB Drive/Stick to fulfill his requests. Irie maaan! The Wedding really needed an in depth pre-meet, but the whole wedding was arranged at the drop of a hat and this just wasn't possible.

The whole night was very urban, each time I tried to introduce other genres, it was with mass exodous of the DF and a visit from the various other "DJs" present telling me I was, erm pony!!! I laughed this off, because I could tell they were bedroom boys.

I really enjoyed the night becuase it was sooo different, I managed to get by with my song selection because I have played lots of Urban, Reggae, Commercial Dancehall in previous residencies. However, I was still playing "very" commercial stuff and was soon handed a hard drive with some "proper" music on it

The differences in culture were facinating as there were TWO seperate ladies BREASTFEEDING on the dancefloor at various points of the evening.

Oops upside your head was COMICAL!

Anyhow, Im off to update my collection. If I'm ever in that kind of situation again, I'll breeze it - Rather than BLAG it!
