Good Gig, Bad Gig.

An interesting Saturday night for me... booked for a 21st with karaoke (groan!) in the parents "small" backgarden.

Anyway - it was 'ok' with drinks and other intoxicating substances in abundance, the karaoke was over and I was playing a good mix of dance, D&B and garage and all was good until some delightful girl who was completely gone fell over into a couple getting it on, and the place erupted into one massive brawl!!!

Handbags at dawn, fists of hair flying, a select choice of words and insults and a group of 10 lunging / falling towards my rig - a DJ's worst nightmare! Everything was good in end and finished 15 minutes early.

I concur. A good 'good gig' report with details of why it went well, what songs worked etc. can be really helpful to others.

Okay,

I was bricking it. Sweating like a pig, clammy hands - the works! It was in a uber posh venue (5 star hotel in Nottingham) and I could tell the guests were rolling in it - one lady had a handbag made of diamonds.

I called Mum before the first dance who made me feel a bit better. TBF, I wanted to curl up in a ball and be sat at home in front of the TV.

The best man came and introduced himself. He was determined to shake my hand which made me feel self concious because of the clammy hands! He ran through the running order of the evening (which I already knew).

The first dance kick started with a nice introduction from myself. I spoke really clearly and slowly which worked well. Straight after the first dance I played this 15 minute CD which I had to semi organise. The gentleman make a huge circle with the ladies in the middle. They all started dancing around and the room was on fire! They then grabbed some chairs and lifted the B&G up in the air.

Pretty steady dancefloor for an hour whilst people mingled and had there photo taken in a cool booth.

At 9.00pm they unleaded some wicked props which really got the dancefloor rocking. Balloons, inflatable guitars and saxophones, black hats and specs etc. I played some lively tunes 'Shout-Lulu', 'Jailhouse Rock - Elvis', 'Everybody needs somebody - Blues Brothers', 'Glad it's all over - Rolling Stones', 'I saw her standing there - Beatles' etc which worked a treat. Bit of motown, 80's and then a 90's club sesh with House of Pain, Ntrance, Faithless, Darude, Underworld, The Shamen etc.

Moved onto a bit of Spice Girls and the usual suspects.

The floor stayed pack with a big sing off at the end with Elvis, Sweet Caroline etc.

It took my a while to ease in and relax. The venue kept complaining about the volume. I didn't use a sub and my Denon mixer didn't reach bar 4 on the master EQ. There is a large restaurant downstairs so when the party were jumping up and down you could really here it.

I have some smashing video clips that I may share at a later date.

I lack confidence (probably too much) - I just wish my music knowledge was better...It's probably alright but that's what I worry about more than anything.

I think you're too hard on yourself, sounds like a great night to me. For your age I definitely think you are ahead of the game. I'd hire you confident that you'd provide me with a great night!

Its always more nerve racking doing weddings coz its so important for the client! I've got a gig on saturday, and this morning my £1500 Macbook pro started playing up, and despite me having a laptop backup and an IDJ2 I am still hot bricks!!!

Big up yourself - and like Sean said you are way ahead of your age with a great setup and a great ethos for business, DJing and Customer care!!!

Charlie, well done, sounds like an excellent gig. Re music knowledge, you're not eighteen yet. Don't sweat it, as long as you know most of the important ones, it's fine.
