That does sound bizarre. Real chaos. Did the bloke come in and do the bingo? If I had booked a function somewhere I would expect it to be private - unless of course it was being done on the cheap.

luckily, i didnt see him again all night, someone must have explained to him what a private function actually was!

the singer set off to another hastily arranged gig he'd managed to get when ringing his agent to complain this one had been cancelled and he hadnt been told.

Mid-day report. Just finished my second kids party of the day and now off to a 70th birthday - bit of a contrast.

I love days like this where we can do a good days work and all the timings slot nicely together. Sadly (not) cutting down on the kids parties now as my wedding photography picking up nicely so rules out most saturdays and sundays now going to be a family day - unless something turns up I can't refuse.

Well I may run out of superlatives in this. I was In Loco Twinspin last night, it's a nice hotel with a lift, so obviously I had to operate with a few less cabs than normal.

Got in, started trundling the kit upstairs, fighting my way through the anklebiters who appeared to be on something heavy duty. Things were not looking good. How wrong can you be? The bride said hello, and was a lovely lady, and when the couple were introduced to me, the groom uttered the immortal words " We don't want any of this modern rubbish, 60's 70's and 80's will do us fine. They'll be dancing all night, and be asking for one more at 1am." Yeah right.
7till 1, what a prospect. 7.20 and I'm nearly on my own, 7.30 and the guests start to return, 7.40 the floor fills, and never empties till 1 am, at which time they did indeed ask for "Just one more"
I have never ever had such a polite and amenable crowd anywhere, and was able to sincerely and honestly thank the crowd for being the best I'd ever had. As a bonus the lappy found a network and joined up it without me asking, I downloaded some tracks I had left at home, and kept up to date on here. I packed up a happy litle bunny, and had an interesting ten minutes driving the SS Continental Drift through some well lubricated and underdressed revellers. I think there might have been a hen party in there somewhere.

I was also covering for Twinspin but unfortunately not-so-good a night as Peter.
I was booked to play at Hull Kingston Rovers Stadium at the Harry Poole Suite (which incidentally is up stairs and quite a walk to the funtion room).
I was paid up-front as they paid John when they booked it.

The bride had loads of 'hardcore' dance anthems on her request sheet and some very obscure tunes (I managed to source nearly all of them). I started plaing at 7pm to no-one, then around 7:30 the B&G and guests started arriving and mulling around. I took this opportunity to play some of the more obscure tracks at (just above) background music volume.

I approached the (very pretty) bride and asked what time for the first dance. It was now 8:20. She said around 8:30-8:45 then the buffet would be ready. I said 'ok just give me a nod when you're ready' - she said 'ok'.

I kept looking across where the buffet was and it was all still wrapped up. It got to 9pm but couldn't make eye contact with the bride so assumed she wasn't ready yet. I went to see the organiser who said the buffet should be open now - no such luck - she went and had a word with the guests who'd arranged the buffet.

Around 9:30 a guy came up and said the bride was waiting for me to call them up so I did and they danced.

As they were dancing I could see the buffet was being unwrapped so played a couple more slowies then announced the buffet open.

Anyway, after they'd eaten I had a lot of people up dancing to all sorts of motown & modern chart music. Then the bride came up and asked why wasn't I playing HER songs, I said 'well as they're dancing they're obviously enjoying themselves and that in my opinion, her songs would clear the floor'
She insisted that I play her songs - I did - it cleared the floor
I had people complaining that the music was rubbish and that I should play this & that (aren't they always the experts ) so I told them to speak to the bride and ask if we could change the music (she wasn't even dancing anyway ) She finally agreed and the last hour or so was really good.

Except for the packing away - but that's another story...
