I knew last night's disco would be easy, partly because it was at a venue 2 minutes up the road, and partly due to the fact that it finished at 11.30pm.
The thing I wasn't so sure about was how well it would go, as it was a 50th wedding anniversary for the parents of somebody in one of my regular pub quiz teams. The party was for about 50 people, and I was expecting lots of older people to be there, and in my experience it can sometimes be harder to get them dancing.

I kicked off at 7.00pm with the background music, and was expecting to start properly at about 8.30, but I saw the buffet beinf brought out at around 8.20pm, so decided to delay the start until about 9.00pm. I had been right about the ages, as about 75% of them were at least 60, but wrong about how I thought things would go. They'd given me a list of about 50 requests, most of which were your usual party songs, and I managed to get through 46 of them before I ran out of time, but what a brilliant night.

From the moment I started, they were lapping it up. They were very lively & often dancing in a circle with the anniversary couple in the middle. It reminded me of a recent thread about smaller functions being more intimate & more enjoyable, which was certainly true last night. Because of this, I also found myself using the mic more than usual.

To be honest, things really couldn't have gone any better, apart from the buffet being brought out 15 minutes earlier, in which case I'd have been able to get through ALL their requests. At the end of the evening, the couple thanked me very much & told me how much they'd enjoyed themselves. As I packed away, the bouncers made my job easier by holding the doors open for me, and I was home a couple of minutes after midnight. Job done!

I had a great night on Saturday evening. It was a wedding reception at a venue about 5 minutes down the road. They'd already paid in full a few weeks ago so no worries there I arrived a little early 5:30pm instead of 6:00pm for a 7:30 start. As it was a very easy load in (literally through the large double doors) I was set up and playing background music by 6:45pm.

Free drinks all night (fresh orange) as it was a Village Hall which is, again, very nice.

The bride had emailed me a few songs that she would have liked and duly obliged. First dance was Kiss From A Rose by Seal. Sound system sounded great and NO problems due to my newly acquired phono to XLR lead

I had all the children up doing party songs (Superman, Music Man, Cha Cha Slide, Hokey Cokey, Conga and plenty of High School Musical). To say the bride specified she wanted NO CHEESE on the night, she was quite happy dancing away to Black Lace with her friends at the bar. I pointed this out to a very amused audience She also saw the funny side

They were a really nice crowd and despite the lack of requests, danced nearly all night. I found out in advance that the B&G were into their 80's/90's rock music (a bit like myself) so had some fun playing all the old classics.

I was supposed to finish at dead on midnight but went over slightly due to the amount of people still dancing (including the children, who are usually asleep by this point - I don't remember seeing any blue smarties in the buffet though

I was packed up by (the specified time) 12:30am and was home 5 minutes later

All in all, a very enjoyable gig and I even got a 'favour' in the form of some sweet pea seeds Strange but nice all the same.

Comments: Thank you Tony a million times for making my party a huge success! You were as ever, the consumate professional and you did a sterling job of keeping my family and myself thoroughly entertained. The inflatable guitars were a huge hit (with myself AND others) and the choice of music was top notch. Also a really big thank you for playing our (Amanda & Me)'s special song (I think you saw the reaction on everybodys face when THAT kicked off!) and for the last minute request by me to play 'Duelling Banjos' which was enjoyed by everybody (especially Me and Mum!).
