Good Gig, Bad Gig.

Last Night:

I had a dinner dance for a school PTA. A black tie function. I arrived at the venue (Wetherby Golf Club) where I have played many times before. I went inside to find the layout of the room ect. I had arrived in good time for the nights events, Started setting up the lighting. I used 2 X 1.25 Meter sections of Astrolite trussing. In the middle was the EFX500 and I used 2 Acme winners on the ends of the truss. This was accompanied with some Haze. All controlled off Martin Light Jockey which looked stunning throughout the night.

A great night as straight after the raffle I kicked off with Valerie, Scissor Sisters and some Girls Aloud. Did some 80's aswell and then back to the 70's and then I was asked for The Killers, Kings Of Leon, Franz Ferdinand. So I did a big Indie set which they went mad for. Straight after that I got asked for some old school dance so I played Robin S - Show Me Love, Oceanic - Insanity, Haddaway - What Is Love. Ended the night with the Dirty Dancing mastermix as requested.

Lots of thanks at the end of the night and the floor was full all the way through the night so a job well done.

Great night tonight. I had a engagement gig for a couple of gay women. When booking they said they had been knocked back by quite a few dj's as it was a gay engagement and were very dubious about having a party as none of their family or friends were gay. After explaining I had no problem etc etc they booked and what a great night.

Karaoke went on till 930 then disco through till 11. They actualy came up to me at the end and said if they knew it was going to go so well they would have organised something till midnight. Dance floor was packed - and i'm going to say it - loads asked for business cards including the venue owners

They have asked me to ring them in morning as they have a date for the civil ceremony and would like me to do the disco and photos.

Does anyone here have problems with gay parties, it has never crossed my mind.

One mistake which I got away with - I played 'Katy Perry - I kissed a girl' A track I nearly always play and never give it a thought.

I did a the reception for a lesbian civil partnership last summer. I started the gig proper early, about 6pm, and was in my local for 10pm! It was a completely dry event - the couple don't drink, so there was no bar, with 100 hard partying nurses in attendance. As soon as one had teh courage to leave, the place emptied from 100+ to about half a dozen in the space of 30 mins!

Bad gig... did a disco for an evening wedding do... the groom is english, the Bride asian. the brides family can't stand the groom and wanted her to marry an asian. The whole family sat in silence during the meal, as soon as it was over all of the brides family just stood up and left! I played for about an hour or so, by which time the groom had left and just a few of his family stayed behind to clear up etc. The family apologised, paid up for the disco and let me pack up!

Did a double 70th birthday in Lingfield. I was recommended and they were very nervous that I was going to deafen them and blind them and play inappropriate music. I did my best reassure them and in the end it was a blinding good gig. Background from 7.30 and through dinner until 10.30 and then a packed dancefloor with lots of 60's and 70's stuff. Even had to play an extra half hour.

Just thought I'd post up a quick gig report....

the gig wasn't actually mine though. I attended a party last Friday where Brad Stewart (Forum member: Blitz) was performing at.

What can I say. VERY impressed.

Equipment: The RCF sound system sounded sweet and was at an enjoyable level without being too loud. Also glad to see Brad is a fan of the "less is more" when it comes to lighting. The lighting he used was all top notch with the likes of martin EFX600's etc. Very nice indeed.

Background music: Lots of comments on the awesome selection of background tunes that had as all reminiscing of days gone by. Everyone had their feet tapping and the music was at an enjoyable level that allowed us to converse with friends we hadn't seen in a while.

Showtime!!: When it was time to step it up a gear the music selection was spot on. The one thing I noticed was how quick the requests were honoured, and it was greatly appreciated by those requesting the songs. My Fiancees friend couldn't believe it when she asked for 'Ultrasonic' and he played it within a minute....and had the dancefloor full of 30+ year old ex-ravers. Excellent stuff!!

I went home thoroughly entertained.

Brad...THANK YOU for an excellent nights entertainment. Spot on!!


Edit: Forgot to mention the mixing. I tend to beatmix quite a bit at gigs, and noticed that Brad does too. He did some great mixing on the night that kept an excellent flow an the floor. Nice job.

So it's all DJs, not just young-ish hairy DJs that get treated with a modicom of suspicion as regards to volume, lighting and ability, then? Excellent

I had a couple of corkers last weekend.

Friday was a staff & members party for the health club at one of our hotels. I've done a couple for them before & as they started arriving (before I'd even played a note) I had one of them come up to me & say "Oh good, it's you. We'll be in for a good night"

I played quite a mixed bag, but 60s Ska went down the best (as per usual with this crowd)

Saturday I did a wedding at Wotton House near Dorking, which was overrunnig so gave me a limited amount of time or my set. Ended up with an all killer, no filler type night.

The other suite on the same corridor had a murder mystery weekend going on, which became quite ammusing when the actors took some of the plot out into the common areas of the hotel. I had to make an announcement for my guests to ignore any arguements or calls for an ambulance that they might hear from the corridor or other suite.

I have to say that the soundproofing at the venue was exceptional though, because when the doors to both rooms were closed you wouldn't know that there was a disco in both rooms going full tilt.
